My name is William Newman, but please call me Bill. I was born Dec. 29, 1949 in South Bend Indiana. I grew up in rural south Western Lower Michigan. I joined the army November 13, 1967 at 17 years old. Went to Basic at Fort Knox, Kentucky and AIT at Aberdeen Proving Grounds Maryland. I landed in Vietnam May 29, 1968 and was assigned to 709th Maintenance Battlion 9th Division. In August of 68 I reenlisted to get out of state side duty in a combat zone. i couldn't understand spitshine and polish in Vietnam. Anyway I went to A Troop 3/5 Cav 9th Div. based at Camp Evens.
I don't or can't remember most of what happened or where I went or what I did while I was there, and hope that this homepage might help to fill in the blanks.
I remember being on the M88 tank recovery crew. Our tank retriever was nicknamed "Hog". Later I was on the "A Mainiac" crew on track 81 until I left Nam May 29, 69. I remember Vandergrif (not sure about spelling) Dong Ha Valley, a fire base on the "z" (could have been Kon-tee-en, not sure about spelling again) Some hill where we took RPG fire all night, and Wonder Beach and many more.
