VARIOUS YOGIC PATHS AND THEIR SYNTHESIS IN SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT Yoga is the union of body, mind and spirit and with God. The eight aspects of yoga as described by Patanjali are: Restraints on behaviour Spiritual observances Practice of postures Expansion of vital energy through breath control Withdrawal of the senses Concentration Meditation Complete absorption Yoga is an art, a science, a philosophy. It touches the life of man at every level, physical, mental, and spiritual. Yoga is a friend to those who embrace it sincerely and totally. It lifts its practitioners from the clutches of pain and sorrow, and enables them to live fully, taking a delight in life. The practice of yoga helps the lazy body to become active and vibrant. It transforms the mind, making it harmonious. Yoga helps to keep one's body and mind in tune with the essence, the soul, so that all three are blended into one. There are many ways to begin the practice of yoga. First and foremost, Patanjali outlines the method of surrender of oneself to God. This involves detachment from the world and attachment to God. One who pratices yoga will be able to recognize his level of personal evolution and, through practice, transcend it until he reaches the very core of his being - the seer. From then on, he lives in the abode of the soul. This source has no beginning and no end. It is an eternal, uninterrupted flow of the life force. Consciousness has seven facets. They are emerging, restraining, created, tranquil, attentive, fissured and finally, pure, eternal or divine. If a practioner uncovers these seven aspects of consciousness, he reaches the exalted, indivisible state of existence where the search for the self ends and the seeker becomes the seer. The most important message coming to us through the ages, is that the real purpose of our life is to cross the ocean of illusion, from the shore of wordly pleasures to the other shore, of emancipation and eternal bliss. |
