Bali bombers said they would go to heaven in video message
JAKARTA (Agencies): Indonesian police said Friday they had found a video message
from the three Bali bombers defending their attacks which killed 20 people last month
and saying they would go to heaven.
"The video contains the confession of the three suicide bombers explaining why they
were prepared to carry out the suicide bombings," National Police Chief Gen. Sutanto
said.
"They said their action was for a noble cause and they would go to heaven," Sutanto
told a press conference after a cabinet meeting.
The video, which has not been publicly released, was found at the hideout of fugitive
Malaysian terror suspect Noordin Mohammad Top in the Central Java city of
Semarang on Wednesday after the arrest of an alleged accomplice, police said.
Noordin is one of Asia's most wanted terrorist suspects.
The discovery of the video came just hours before police raided a house in neighboring
East Java province and killed Noordin's colleague and compatriot, bombmaker Azahari
Husin, another most-wanted militant.
"We will distribute this video to religious leaders so that they can help in countering
this false belief that you can go to heaven by killing others along with yourself,"
Sutanto said.
Sutanto said two of the three bombers had been identified as Salik Firdaus and
Misno, but gave no further details about them. Police on Thursday had identified two
men only by their initials and said they were from Java island. (**)
