Updates - Summer 2001

On May 23,2001 Floyd Bennett Field celebrated it's 70th anniversary at the William Fitts Ryan Visitor Center ( control tower ) . There were many visitors, guests, park employees, and of course the hard working HARP Volunteers. A good time was had by all.
The Grumman Goose :   After a long and intensive period of restoration the Grumman Goose was fired up and taxied to the W.F. Ryan visitor center for all to view. It was a good sight to see from Flatbush ave.
The PT-26 : The PT-26 is moving along very well. Wood repairs on the center is 95% complete, the wings are complete and the instrument panel is being worked on.The next project will be applying the fabric to the center section and painting the aircraft. We are also starting the engine which requires a lot of wiring and engine mount replacement.
The A-4 : The topside painting is complete and the graphics are being added. The multicolored rudder was attached and looks great. Next is the underside to be painted. What needs to be located is three wheels and a new canopy.
The P2V Neptune : We are in the process of priming the plane with Zinc Chromate and painting the exhaust stacks black along with the the nose. Work is starting on the interior now.
The PBY-5A : The elevators on the tail were removed, stripped of old fabric, and cleaned.  All repairs on the vertica and horizontal section are complete. All paint was removed and the plane is getting a good cleaning. The wings are still being worked on ( big job ).
The Motor Pool : The motor pool has done a great job in restoring a 1946 Dodge 3/4 ton ambulance. The vehicle was located in Sandy Hook, NJ and was just a mess . It was rusted and full of holes. The HARP members had the vision and the skill to complete this task and now it looks like it just rolled off the assembly line. GREAT JOB GUYS!
The Machine Shop : Due to problems with the electrical during the last few months , things have been a little slow. Our able electricians have conquered the problems and now things are moving right along.
