Batcombe Somerset was visited by our cousins Bill and Prue Spaul 2005 and here are some of their photos - it is hard to find Batcombe - "on a single lane road winding through farm country with high hedgerows on either side of the road its way down in the  valley but the church is on top of a hill."

Directory Information:
[From The London & Provincial Medical Directory 1949]
1815 Registered surgeon named Joseph Furze  before 1815. - not our Joseph surely.
1849 "Tower Hill", [there is one in Devon, Pembroke, and Hertford and Bristol!] yes it is a street very close to Narrow Plain Road, Bristol where he lived in 1851.

Could our Joseph Furze have  become a surgeon by 20-221 years of age? I think not  since  investigating the  history of surgeons..
"To become a true (medical) Doctor, one had to rain at  London, Edinburgh or Dublin. But anyone could become a surgeon - or "barber and surgeon", as the trade started, with a red-and-white spiral-striped pole outside the shop to represent the blood and soap as advertisement! But being untrained and without a diploma, surgeons had to call themselves 'Mr', not 'Doctor'. Commonly  they were both Surgeon and Apothecary.  See history of surgeons here

Note Joseph Furze lived at Tower Hill Bristol  not Clifton House.

1854  "Clifton House,  Clifton, Bristol" UK [Laurie Hocking's "The Furze Family in Australia"]
[ I do not think this is so - see history of this house below]

Modern map of Bristol with St Philips & St Jacobs church, address is Tower Hill..
Perhaps there was a hospital  at the site of the health clinic  when Joseph lived nearby 1850s.

1851 Census for Gloucestershire Bristol: Parish of St Phillips & St Jacobs,Bristol -[ HO/107/1954, part 3, Enumeration district 1z, page 31.] (or st philips and st Jacobs Glouc. HO 107/375 for 1851 Bristol.)

# 172 Narrow Plain Street, Clifton , Bristol
Joseph Furze,  head of house, M ,    age 56,  Surgeon & apothecary, born Somerset, Batcome
Elizabeth  Furze ,    wife ,        M,     age 57                                            ditto    ditto
Ellen Mary  ditto,    dau,                   age 14                 scholar                 ditto    ditto
Frederick ditto,     son ,                    age 16          Apprentice to Father     ditto    ditto
Henry ditto,            son ,                 age 18           Printer                     ditto    ditto
Maria xxx        servant,                    age 15                                            born Bristol

I note one   Jane  Elizabeth xxxx  born Batcombe Somerset, was living in the house next door to Joseph Furze and co in the Bristol Census - and they had a son listed, Henry Furze xxx aged 1 - her husband's name is Henry  SIRCOM.
I did  see the St Caths British Marriage Indexes  28-1-2004 and confirmed that the Henry SIRCOM   married "Jane Elizabeth FURZE"   Bristol District, pg 232 June quarter 1849.  A marriage certificate would confirm this but is unnecessary as she is living next door to her parents  in the 1851 census.
See Dewelling before  Furzes:  Henry SIRCOM  aged 25,  accountant, born Bristol, wife June Elizabeth aged 23  born Batcombe, Somerset, Henry Furze SIRCOM  aged 1 born Bristol.

NB First columns is the street and dwelling number- not always the same a the house numbers today.
Second column is the persons name, third column relationship to the head of the household, the next column indicated if the person ie either married or no- this  means they may be  widowed or divorced [no such thing then except for nobility] separated, or never married,
Third column shows age- first of these narrow columns is age of female, second narrow column is for the males age, then the occupation, all people under a certain age were not supposed to be working so the word scholar was put there or the parent would be fined, the next column is for the place of birth,
The far right column is for a  ticks  to indicate a deaf or dumb or blind  or idiot person!
Note only the Furze's have ticks- how could they be like this when one is a surgeon one a printer and one a surgeon's apprentice?

Possibly  the church Joseph Furze was baptised  or married Elizabeth xxxxx  at St Mary's Church, Batcombe, Map Search   [Near Shepton Mallet]

All these places except Bristol are very close about 5 miles away from Batcombe
In the 1820-1830s there was a great deal of religious/political rioting in this area.

Clifton Hill House part of University of Bristol
selected from http://www.bris.ac.uk/Depts/CliftonHill/architec.htm

Clifton Hill House is an 18th century merchant´s house on Clifton Hill -part of  University in 1909.
Clifton Hill House was built between 1746 and 1750 for Paul Fisher, a  linen draper, wealthy merchant and ship owner.  He was  prominent in the foundation of the Bristol Royal Infirmary in 1735.

In 1851 Clifton Hill House was bought by Dr. Symonds, a well-known Bristol physician who was famous not only for his medical proficiency but also for his gift at entertaining the literary and artistic élite of his time. . The house was then filled with distinguished and talented people including  Jenny Lind, the celebrated Victorian singer. She sang several times at the Victoria Rooms and in 1862 stayed at Clifton Hill House and sang in what is now the Symonds Music Room.

Other famous people stayed at Clifton Hill House; John Masefield, the Poet Laureate and Dame Clara Butt who, in 1921, gave a concert in the house to launch a fund for the construction of Manor Hall. When Dr. Symonds died in 1871, the house passed on to his son.
