Overpowering Steam Engines
Steam engines can be pushed beyond their rated capacity. Power output can be increased up to 25 percent each turn (5 seconds). The chief engineer rolls each turn:
Power Output | Roll |
+25 percent | Average |
+50 percent | Difficult |
+75 percent | Formidable |
+100 percent | Impossible |
On an outstanding success, the engine runs perfectly. On a normal success, the engine runs normally, but increase the wear value of the engine by one. On a normal failure, the engine breaks down and must be repaired (1D20×5 minutes). Additionally, there is a one-in-20 chance for each person in the engine room to be scalded by hot steam. Treat these as burns by normal fire. On a catastrophic failure, the boiler explodes, everyone in the engine room is killed, and the vehicle takes one critical hit for each megawatt of power output.
