Question on Movie expectations
Are you excited about the movie deal for Harry Potter?
Where else might we see Harry Potter in the future (toys,
video games, etc.)?
-
I am very excited (and a little bit nervous) about Harry
Potter, the movie. Warner Brothers have bought merchandising
rights, so it is possible that we will be seeing Harry
Potter toys.

Question on Transition from book to movie
I have read that Warner Brothers bought the film rights to
"Harry Potter." How do you feel about Hollywood re-creating
your characters?
-
A mixture of excitement and nervousness! I do think "Harry"
would make a great film, but obviously I feel protective
towards the characters I've lived with for so long.

Question on Casting the movies
How much control do you have over the film?
-
Control, I wouldn't say--I'm really aware that I'm being
invited to give my opinion. But I don't have any right to
jackboot in there and say this or that. But I sold it to
people I trusted, and so far my trust has not been
misplaced. We're looking at an all-British cast. At first
that looked like an impossibility. There was many a director
who couldn't see that working at all. I would say things are
going really well at the moment. People have to understand
that no one could feel as protective as I do about these
characters. If it goes wrong, I'm going to be hurting more
than anyone else.

Question on Casting the movies
So have they cast it?
-
There are people being made offers now, but is it entirely
cast? No. Harry himself is proving very elusive. It's like
Scarlett O'Hara--this is the child equivalent of looking for
Vivien Leigh. I just said, "We'll know him when we find
him." I am now walking around in London and Edinburgh, and
I'm looking at kids as I pass them, just thinking, Could be,
you never know. I may just lunge at this kid and say, "Can
you act? You're coming with me. Taxi!"

Question on Input on movie adaptation
Are you having a lot of input on the new Harry Potter movie?
-
I've been allowed a lot of input. They have been very
generous in allowing me to make my opinions heard!

done so far)!

Question on Transition from book to movie

Question on Movie expectations
Do you think that making a Harry Potter movie will help
people understand the books better or will it ruin the
imagination for the books?
-
I don't think people need help understanding the books. I
hope the film will be really good and not disappoint the
fans. Personally, I can't wait to watch Quidditch.

Question on Transition from book to movie
Do you have enough control over the movie?
-
I dunno, probably you should ask me that once the film is
out. I mean, they've only just started shooting. My opinion
has been asked about all sorts of things, where I didn't
think I would ever be consulted. And I am greatful for that,
obviously. I think they see me as in front of about a
million children wanting it done my way, and that's giving
me any power I may have. I have script approval. As of the
moment the script looks great to me, so people I will have
to share some blame in that.

Question on Transition from book to movie
What are your feelings on Harry Potter, the movie?
-
I haven't seen much yet, they've only just begun shooting.
But from what I've seen so far: I've met most of the cast,
and they really have cast great people. It's an all-British
cast, which has obviously been my dream. Because they are
all British characters in my books, until you get to the
fourth book when there are foreign wizards. And that seemed
incredible to me because when they first started casting I
was kinda worried some Americans might creep in, and that
didn't happen.

Question on Transition from book to movie
What do you think about the script?
-
I think the script looks great. It's very faithful to the
book. We worked it out, that if every element in the book
would be in the film it would be 3 hours long. God only
knows what might happen if they try and film [book] four. We
may have to have 3 films or something. Steve Kloves is a
very good writer, I'm glad it is him. When I met him for the
very first time, he was the person I was most antagonistic
about (without ever meeting him) because he was going to
butcher my baby. And the first thing he said to me was: "Do
you know who my favorite character is?" and I really thought
he was going to say Ron, I mean Ron is very easy to love,
everyone loves Ron, and I was very tense about it, and he
said Hermione. And I melted, and I thought, if he could love
Hermione then we could work together.

Question on Transition from book to movie
What's the young fellow cast as the lead like? Have you met
him?
-
Yeah, I have, Dan Radcliffe. That was getting really
nerve-wrecking, cause noone could find Harry Potter. They
casted Ron and Hermione and couldn't find Harry and I was
getting more and more nervous. Because if they couldn't find
a British Harry, what'll they do, maybe they will go to
America. They never did see an American actor, but I was
nervous. And then the producer and the director walked into
the theater one night and they sat down next to Dan
Radcliffe. Who is an actor, the whole thing was bizarre. And
they approached him during the interval with his parents.
And they said: Do you act, and he said yes. But his parents
didn't want him to do it, which I find very reassuring.
Because I did say to David, who is the producer, I don't
want these children's lives ruined, like a lot of child
actors. And I loved the fact that his mother didn't want him
to do it. He burningly wanted to do it, and so she said okay
let's test him, and he was fantastic. I really wanted him to
get it, I saw his tests and I thought he was great.

Question on Transition from book to movie
Why is it important for the actors to be British?
-
'Cause they are British, my characters are British. I didn't
want the Dick van Dyke situation, if you've seen Mary
Poppins. Dick van Dyke playing the world's only Australian
cockney. I was dreading that that would happen.
