Hi Tricia - Thank you, thank you, thank you for answering so quickly. I've been working on the Arndt file this morning. I have tons of questions but I'll ask them slowly. Let me look over my info before I start firing.
I know what you mean about documented proof that Susan Arndt belongs to John Arndt and Susanna Roeder. We can't furnish that but think we give you some incredible circumstantial evidence.
Susan and Luke had six children, the first four being born in Pickaway County OH and the last two in Piatt County IL. There was a migration to Piatt County by Luke (with family) and his brother Franklin (with family) about 1855. But along with them went Susan's parents, brother John as well as two married sisters. What ties Susan to John & Susanna is that when she died in 1859 her firstborn daughter and last born daughter were sent to live with John & Susanna Arndt. Her son George was sent to live with Sophia Arndt Hoover and her family in Macon Co., IL. And I have a xerox of a letter written by her son John in 1870 mentioning that he was living with his Uncle John Arnt.
I was lucky enough to obtain copies of some old photographs. The ones of Susan and Luke's children have been positively identified. We also have others that are suspected to be LUke with two of his daughters. Another is possible Susan, standing alone. There are two others, one a male alone and the other a couple that we suspect might be Arndts. We see certain resemblances but wonder if we are just hoping to see something that really doesn't exist.

Miss Clarissa Arndt of Seborn Avenue pleasantly entertained the members of the Carnation club Thursday afternoon. Holiday decorations made the rooms in the Arndt residence very beautiful and a huge inverted umbrella contained a present for each guest. A two-course luncheon was served. The election of officers resulted as follows: Mrs. Etzel, president; Mrs. Terry, vice president; Mrs. Russell, secretary; Mrs. Findeise, treasurer. KILLED AT BELLAIRE
MUSKINGUM COUNTY BOY LOSSES HIS LIFE
Charles Hoffman Fell 75 Feet From a Bridge and was Instantly Killed
Thursday evening's Bellaire Independent prints the following account of the horrible death by accident of a Muskingum County young man at that place Thursday.
"Charles Hoffman, a young man employed on the Baltimore & Ohio bridge, accidentally fell from the bridge to the river bank on the Benwood side at 7:30 this morning, a distance of 75 feet, and was instantly killed.
Hoffman, whose home is at Salt Creek, a few miles west of Zanesville, has been employed the last three months on the riveting gang of the American Bridge company which is engaged in the reconstruction of the B & O bridge. This morning the heater was late to his work and Hoffman was in the act of lighting his forge and took a backward step on a loose plank when the plank upturned and without a moment's warning he was precipitated to the ground below, alighting on a huge timber and died instantly.
When his fellow workmen reached his side there was not a spark of life apparent. Both arms and both legs were broken, his body crushed and his skull and face crushed almost beyond recognition. Messages were sent to his relatives at Salt Creek and Zanesville immediately. The body was taken to Becker's undertaking establishment in Benwood and prepared for burial.
The deceased was an excellent young man, 19 years of age, and roomed with John Oswald on Union Street, taking his meals at the Arlington restaurant. In his short stay here he had made many friends who are grieved to learn of his untimely death.
REMAINS OF CHAS. HUFFMAN
The remains of Charles Huffman who was accidentally killed at Bellaire Thursday morning, arrived at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Nimrod Huffman, in Salt Creek township Friday afternoon. Funeral services will be conducted at the late residence Sunday afternoon. Huffman was a painter by occupation and at one time was in the employment of the company having in charge the erection of the plant of the Eastern Tube company in this city. It will be recalled that he then met with an accident. He was engaged in painting at the top of one of the buildings when he fell to the ground, a distance of over 60 feet, but miraculously escaped without any injury.

Mrs. Anna D. Parkinson, aged 29, the wife of Clarence L. Parkinson, died at the Good Samaritan Hospital at 3:30 o'clock Wednesday morning after a lingering illness from a complication of diseases. Besides her husband, she is survived by two children, Charles H. and Esther H. Parkinson, an by her mother, Mrs. Caroline Huffman and one sister, Miss Theresa Huffman of this city. she was a former resident of Duncan Falls and was a member of the Philo M. E. Church. The body was removed to the Hearing undertaking rooms and prepared for burial and taken to the home of her mother, Mrs Huffman, 630 Zane Street, where the funeral will be conducted at 12 o'clock noon Friday by Rev. Mr. Kinney of Trinity M. E. Church. Burial will be made in the Duncan Falls Cemetery. (Zanesville Obit). DILLON ROAD RESIDENT DIES
Clarence Leslie Parkinson, 66, of Dillon Road died last night at 8 o'clock at the Rocky Glen Sanitorium in McConnelsville where he had been a patient since July 23, 1952.
He was born in Zanesville, on October 17, 1886, a son of Edward and Agnes Henderson Parkinson.
He was a lifelong resident of Zanesville and worked for 40 years in potteries and brick y ards here and seven years in a local foundry.
Mr. Parkinson was a member of the Market Street Baptist church.
Surviving are a son, Charles E. of 33 Glessner Avenue; one daughter, Mrs. Esther Shumate, of West Main Street; two brothers, Ed of Wheeler Road and Harry of Stone Street; one sister, Mrs. Blanche Mann of Linden Avenue; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. His wife, Anna, died in 1914. A brother, John, is also deceased.
The body is at the Dean-Ransom funeral home pending arrangements.
Buried in plot A36 - located on the first drive to the right as you drive in the main entrance. The stone is gone, but the plot is located by the cannon. Lucy Jane Parkinson, 73, of 33 Glessner Avenue, died at 1:18 am Tuesday, September 11, at Good Samaritan Medical Center following a long illness.
She was born December 12, 1910, in West Virginia, the daughter of Albert and Priscilla Oiler Hayth.
Mrs. Parkinson attended the North Terrace Church of Christ and was employed by Essex Wire for 31 years, retiring in 1974.
Her husband, Charles Parkinson, died July 25, 1971.
Surviving are one son, Charles A. Parkinson of the home; one daughter, Mrs. James (Marjorie) Smallwood of West Pike in Hopewell; one brother, George Hayth of Zanesville; 13 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

WOMAN NOT GUILTY
At hearing Saturday morning in municipal court, Julia Williams, 808 Hughes street, was found not guilty of a charge of assault. She was brought into court early last week on an affidavit filed by Esther Shumate. John P. Baker attorney for the plaintiff while John Allen represented the defendent.

Service for Mrs. Esther Shumate, 57, of Pompano Beach, Fla., a Zanesville native, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at DeLong and Baker Funeral Home. Rev. Larry Rossiter will officiate and burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Shumate died Friday in North Brownard Hospita1 in Pompano Beach.
Mrs. Esther Shumate, 57, of Pompano Beach, FL, a Zanesville native, died at 3:20 am Friday, August 8th, at North Brownard Hospital there.
She was born January 25th, 1912, in Zanesville, a daughter of Clarence and Anna Parkinson.
Survivors include her husband, Samuel Shumate of 850 1/2 Marietta Street; six sons: Harry, Jerry and John of Pompano Beach, William of 347 Mead St, Clarence of 1070 South Luck Ave, and Gerald of 221 Stillwell St; Mrs. Betty (Norman) Johnson of Kissimee FL, Mrs Phyllis (Lawrence) Tabler of Ridge Ave, Mrs. Linda (Bee) Harris of 131 Ninth St, and Miss Saundra Shumate of the Rogge Hotel; a brother, Charles Parkinson of Glessner Ave; and 19 grandchildren.

Samuel Shumate Injured
Samuel Shumate, of East Market street, a coal miner employed at the Werner Coal mine in Downard road, was severely hurt about the ankle in a fall of slate in the mine at about 8 o'clock Friday morning. He was removed to his home and later taken to Good Samaritan hospital where his injuries were found to consist of a fracture of a small bone in his ankle. The joint also was badly sprained and bruised.
Reports of the accident were meager other than Shumate had been injured in a fall of slate in the mine. At first, physicians feared his back had been hurt, but inter developments showed this was not the case. Shumate was resting comfortably at an early hour this morning.

Samuel Shumate
Samuel Shumate, 82, of 818 Harvey Street, died at 6:30 am Tuesday at his home of an apparent heart attack.
Mr. Shumate was born Sept 1, 1897, in Coalton, a son of Samuel and Cinderella Vanmeter Shumate. He was a retired coal miner and a retired employee of the old Hazel Atlas Co.
Mr. Shumate attended South Zanesville Wesleyan Methodist Church and was a veteran of World War I.
His wife, Esther, died in August 1968.
Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Phyllis Tabler of 454 Schultz Dr., Mrs. Edward (Linda) Harris of 818 Harvey St. with whom Mr. Shumate made his home, Mrs. Norman (Betty) Johnson of 5100 East Pike and Mrs. David (Saundra) Holbert of 841 Turner St.; six sons, William of 137 Brighton Blvd., Clarence of 332 Pine St., Harry of 630 1/2 Main St., Gerald of 820 Harvey St., Jerry of Pompano Beach FL and John of 19 S. Sixth St.; two brothers, Amos of 120 Fox Ave., and Arthur of 1541 Central Ave.; 30 granchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

There's a story behind the little chubby hand clutching that small but well known card.
The hand is that of a youngster, a Zanesville boy. His name is Johnnie Shumate, but it doesn't have to be. He could be any kid - anyone of 500 odd small fry who annually become full fledged members of the Y.
Like Johnnie, they find this to be an affiliation they are mighty happy about, for it entitles them to daily hours of fun the year round.
Nine-year-old Johnnie is one of 11 children of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Shumate of Dillon Road whose ages range from three to 21.
Together with two older brothers, Jerry, 11, and Gerald, 13, Johnnie last year became the proud owner of a YMCA membership, the gift of a forward-looking Zanesvillian intent on giving three deserving youths something they could otherwise not have afforded.
And there is little doubt that this anonymous donor mad a wise investment. Her action served to open new horizons for a trio of grateful brothers. For their Y cards entitle them to an activity that would otherwise have been beyond their grasp. Briefly, it allows them to attend regularly scheduled gym and pool classes, as well as to participate in over 150 major YMCA events throughout the year.
These include special holiday programs at Halloween, Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter; basketball tournaments, lifesaving lessons and the "Learn to Swim" campaign, now in its 30th year, which alone attracted 400 persons in 1951.
According to George Narvel, until recently boy secretary, the Shumates have been among the most appreciated of the thousands who regularly enjoy YMCA facilities.
That statement is not hard to believe when you consider that it is a full 40-minute hike from the Shumate residence to downtown Zanesville - and there is no buss connection either.
In spite of that, the three Shumate boys have boasted 100 percent attendance at YMCA classes throughout the entire summer.
That's quite a record to be proud of, and it is indicative of their interest in the classes which meet three times a week. And when the Y conducted tours on foot of industry, visiting 26 factories and places of business during the hottest Zanesville summer on record, the Shumates made sure they did not miss a single one.
So when it came to awarding scholarships to Camp Moores, there could hardly have been three more deserving youngsters that Johnnie, Jerry and Gerald. Their initial camp experience was largely made possible through your dollars to the Community Chest, which also enables the YMCA, a member agency, to accomodate 30 of the most needy youngsters each year without charge at Camp Moores.
And how do these youngsters react to all this? Young Johnnie probably summed up their feelings best when asked by this reporter if he would rather spend two hours in the movies or two hours at the Y. His answer: "The Y, of course!"
Grateful for the benefits her sons are reaping from the Y, Mrs. Shumate says, "It gives me peace of mind to know that they are there. When they're at the YMCA, I know that I have nothing to worry about . .and the kids sure love it."
That knowledge is shared by thousands of Zanesville families who, through their children, have a direct stake in the success of the YMCA program toward better living and better citizenship. In turn, that program is only made possible through your contributions to the Community Chest.
Mr. Shumate is an employee of Hazel Atlas. The other children are: Butch, 3; Saundra, 4; Linda, 7; Betty Lou, 12; Harry, 14; Phyllis Ann, 17; Clarence, 19 and Bill, a Korean Veteran, 21.

City Lists 4th 1960 Fatality
Zanesville recorded its fourth traffic fatality of the year Wednesday afternoon within 15 hours of the third traffic death when an 11-year-old boy was struck and killed as he played along Wayne avenue.
Samuel Carson Shumate, Jr., one of 11 children of Samuel and Esther Shumate of Dillon road near Wayne avenue, was killed almost instantly when he ran in front of a pickup truck driven by Patrick J. Norman, 54, of Blue Rock Route 1, according to police.
Lt. Milton Mick said the boy had been playing with a snapping toy and was running up to the side of passing cars and snapping it at traffic.
He apparently misjudged his speed and was unable to stop as he ran up to Norman's truck, Mick said. The boy was struck and knocked backward onto his head, according to police.
Witnesses estimate the truck was traveling only about 25 miles an hour at the time of the mishap. Norman said he saw the boy just an instant before the truck struck him and did not have time to put on his brakes.
The boy was taken in a DeLong and Baker ambulance to Bethesda Hospital where he was dead on arrival. Coroner S. S. Daw, who viewed the body, said young Shumate had suffered internal injuries and a possible fractured skull.
Police said Norman was not held. The accident occurred in front of the Greiner Dairy building at 3:59 p.m. police said.
Young Shumate was born in Zanesville, a son of Samuel and Esther Parkonson Shumate. He was a third-grade pupil at Pioneer School and attended Sunday School at St. John's Lutheran Church.
His father is in Veterans Hospital at Dayton.
Surviving in addition to the parents are six brothers, Jerry, Harry, Gerald and John, all of the home, Clarence of 1132 Arch street, and William of Woodlawn avenue; four sisters, Linda and Sandra, both of the home, Betty of Mill Run road and Mrs. Phyllis Tabler of Roseville.
The body was removed to the DeLong and Baker Funeral Home where friends may call after 7 this evening.

Ronald L. 'Humphrey' Mayle, 51
ZANESVILLE -- Ronald L. "Humphrey" Mayle, 51, of Philo, died at 10:08 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004, at the Ohio State University Hospital.
He was born March 16, 1953, in Zanesville, the son of Naomi Newman Mayle and the late Raymond G. Mayle. He worked for McGraw Edison for 20 years as a tow motor operator and at Grief Brothers, as well. He was a member of the Union Tabernacle Church and a past member of the Boy Scouts. He was a U.S. Marine Corp. veteran, and loved to hunt and fish.
Besides his mother, he is survived by his wife, Kimberly S. Shumate Mayle of the home, whom he married May 17, 1980; a son, Stephen A. Mayle of the home; a brother, Tony (Lisa) Mayle of Philo; two sisters, Cathy (Phillip) Avery of Petersburg, Mich. and Victoria (Philip) Watters of Zanesville; many aunts and uncles; 19 nieces and nephews; and seven great-nieces and nephews.
Besides his father who died in 1992, he was preceded by a brother, David Mayle; his paternal grandparents, Nimo and Eva Mayle; and his maternal grandparents, Alston and Alberta Newman.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today, Dec. 11, at Union Tablernacle Church, 2433 Hartford Ave., and one hour prior to services.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004, at the church, with Pastor Terry D. Newman officiating. Burial will follow in Duncan Falls Cemetery with VFW George Selsam Post 1058 holding full military rites.
Flowers may be delivered at the church after noon, today.
The Bolin Funeral Home, 1271 Blue Ave., is entrusted with arrangements.

MALIK RASHID SESAY, INFANT
Zanesville - Malik Rashid Sesay, one month old, of Zanesville, died at 10:13 am Friday, July 28, 2000, at Children's Hospital in Columbus.
He was born June 24, 2000, in Columbus.
He is survived by his mother, Catherine Shumate, of Zanesville; father, Solomon Sesay of Columbus; maternal grandmother, Peggy Shumate of Zanesville, maternal grandfather, Onelio Almeida of Columbus; maternal great grandmother, Elnora Miller of Zanesville; several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Calling hours are 2-4 and 6 -8 pm Wednesday at DeLong-Baker & Lanning Funeral Home, 56 S. 5th St., Zanesville, where services will be held at 10:30 am Friday with Elder Nathan McDonald officiating.
Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
