Queensland Rain Forests

Most of Australias prime rainforests have been destroyed during the 18th to 20th century, but recently Australians have become   aware of the treasures that had been exploited and wasted.
There are still some very beautiful areas of primary forest left, and most of them have been declared National Parks or State Forest Reserves. They offer easy access and comfortable accommodation within the parks or nearby. Usually, very good information material is available, either directly at the park ranger's office or from Nature Conservation headquarters. Detailed maps and guide-books to certain areas are available, as are field guides to all different groups of the local flora and fauna. (I left Queensland with an excess of 15 kg of books and maps in my hand luggage - which the Quantas people didn't really like...)
If you (as I myself do) belong to the group of nature-loving freaks that  prefer snakes, bramble, rain and leeches to cellphones, television, techno music and and the smell of fuel, some of the parks will appear too civilized for you. But there are also parks where you can walk for days without seeing much of civilization. If you are inexperienced or don't carry the right equipment with you, you can literally get lost on one of those hardly discernable trails.
