Downtown Honolulu
Welcome to my webcam. This is a view from downtown Honolulu facing southeast towards the Hawaii Capital Historic District. Diamond Head can be seen in the far distance. The majestic State Capitol building is near the center. Across the State Capitol is Washington Place, the former governors' residence.
The most famous volcanic crater in the world is Diamand Head, located on the South-east coast of O'ahu at the end of Waikiki. It was originally named Laeahi, meaning "brow of the tuna" by the ancient Hawaiians. The current name was given to the crater by British sailors in the 1800's. Diamond Head is a volcano that has been extinct for 150,000 years. The crater is 3,520 feet in diameter with a 760-foot summit.
March15, 1969 marked the historic opening of Hawaii's State Capitol building. The State Capitol is home to the executive and legislative activity in the State. The conic shape of the legilative chambers represents volcanoes, the 40 pillars encircling the building are reminiscent of native royal palm trees, and the water surrounding the structure is symbolic of the Pacific.
Next to Washington Place, just beyond the parking lot, is Saint Andrew Cathedral. Visible in the foreground is the  watch tower of the Central Fire Station, added to the National Registry of Historical Places in 1980. Brief descriptions of these historical landmarks are provided below.
Named in honor of the first president of the U.S., Washington Place was built by John Dominis in 1846. Since 1921, it has been the residence of record for Hawaii's governors. A new residence for the governor was built on an adjacent piece of land and Washington Place was converted to a museum in 2003. Official state functions will still be held at Washington Place.
In 1862, King Kamehameha IV deeded 7,458 square yards of land at Emma Square for use by the Anglican Church. After King Kamehameha IV's death on Saint Andrews Day 1863, his brother Kamehameha V named the Cathedral after Saint Andrew. The cornerstone of the Cathedral was laid on March 5, 1867 and was finally completed September 21, 1958.
