like in photoshop which has a color box
illustrator has 2 color boxes.

the box on the LEFT is for filling images
the box on the RIGHT is for filling lines or STROKING lines

the little box at the bottom clears things after you messed
   with them.

under that you have 3 boxes associated with the fill and stroke boxes
the RIGHT box draws a line thru the above box (so its not used)
the box on the LEFT removes the line the RIGHT box drew
the box in the MIDDLE looks likes its used for GRAIDENT stuff (im not sure)

handle PhotoCD's or ProPhotoCD's. the article seemed to indicate that
PhotoCD's and ProPhotoCD's were more specialized then PictureCD's
and that most any lab could handle PictureCD's.

PhotoCD's can be made when the film is devloped or from the
prints or negitives. PictureCD's must be made when the film
    is devolped.

PictureCD's

the CD holds about 40 images, pictures, or photos

    format is jpeg or .jpg

creating the PictureCD is a one shot deal. you must add all the
photos at time of creation. you cant add photos after creating the
PictureCD. (with PhotoCD and ProPhotoCD's you can add photos after
    creating the CD)

PictureCD's must be created at the time the film is devolped.
you cant make a PictureCD from the prints or negatives.

    or negatives)

when the PEN TOOL is over a point it will be followed by a caret ^

when the PEN TOOL will add another point to a line it will be followed by a / or SLASH

----------------------------------

to stop drawing a line with the pen tool (and i suspect any other tool)
to finish drawing a line with the pen tool (and i suspect any other tool)
do one of these things

       a) hold down CNTL and click away from a line
       b) click on EDIT
                       DESELECT ALL
       c) click on the PEN TOOL in the tool box

----------------------------------

to split i suspect any line (maybe only lines made with pen maybe not)

     1) select the line with the dark black SELECT TOOL

     2) use the SISSORS TOOL and click on the line where you want to cut it
it can be any where on the line.
it doesnt have to be an anchor point

     3) the SISSORS TOOL will create 2 new points at that location

     4) not use the DIRECT-SELECTION tool to move one of these points
to a new location to split the line.

the other remaining point will be the end of the old line

----------------------------------

to put arrow heads, hands, feathers and other gizmos on the ends of lines
do this

      1) select the line with the select tool
or maybe create the line with the PEN TOOL

      2) go FILTER
                  STYLIZE
                     ADD ARROW HEADS

      3) in a box use the values

to draw beizer curves with the PEN TOOL
to draw bezier curves (spelled right) with the PEN TOOL
to draw curved lines with the PEN TOOL

       1) click on the first point to draw
       2) draw the HANDLE to where you want it to be
after you select the 2nd point
          the middle of the curve
(thats where the curve has a slope of zero)
          will point to the HANDLE
the LENGTH of the HANDLE line determines how
          high the curve will be
       3) click on the ENDING point

i suspect you can have PERFECT bezier curves
and use the SHIFT key to create these PERFECT bezier curves
but REMEMBER until you select the 2nd point it has
no way of knowing where the middle point will be.

i suspect that when editing or modifying a curved line
you can use the SHIFT to make the curved line perfect
and PERFECT means the middle of the curve is exactly
half way between the begining and ending points

to add a corner point
(which i think is also a change of direction for the pen tool)
  1) hold the mouse over an existing point on the line
  2) hold down the ALT key
  3) drag the mouse to create the curve HANDLE
  4) select the new end point
(it could be the begining of the line to make the line circular)

or maybe

   1) alt click on point you want to add another curve to
   2) move the mouse to create the HANDLE on the curve line
   3) click on the end point

these both (or maybe one of them)
let you add another curve to the end of a line
or close the line and make it enclose something,

page 108 covers this ALT/click stuff.

this was added after i took the notes.
but here is the deal.

    1) you have created ONE curved line
    2) you want to add a curved LINE at the end of the
       current curved line

       to do this you
          a) click on the point thats at the end of the line
          b) drag the mouse to create the HANDLE or curve point
          c) click on the final end point of the curve

well sometimes in step B things get fucked up and
instead of applying a SINGLE CURVE in the NEXT line
it gives you TWO CURVES in the LAST or PRIOR line

holding down the ALT in step A forces
a SINGLE CURVE for the NEXT line instead of
creating a DOUBLE CURVE on the LAST or PRIOR line

i beleive using the ALT key is called a CHANGE of DIRECTION

----------------------------------

you can assign labels to parts of a drawing and then
people can go there by clicking

       VIEW
         leaf
         stem
         pear
         nipple
         pussy
         drivers license birth date
         drivers license expire date
         social security name
         socail security number

learn how to define these labels so i can
use them in the drawings in my fakeid book
or is that fake id book

----------------------------------

to change a curve either by twisting on the handle or
playing with the curve use the
direction selection tool its the white arrow not the selection arrow thats solid black

  1) click on the curve you want to modify with the selection direction tool
either on the POINT you want to modify
in this case you can now twist the curves handle
and make the curves handle longer and shorter

you can also click on the segement of the line you want to modify
with the selection direction tool and
MOVE THE CURVE ITS SELF - but this way is a bitch

you can also use the SELECTION DIRECTION TOOL to move a line poiubt

  1) click on the point with the SELECTION DIRECTION TOOL
make sure you see the dot or square next to the SELECTION DIRECTION TOOL
     indicating you grabbed the point

  2) now move the point to another location

----------------------------------

the key to bezier curves!

in bezier curves you have a curve that connects point A to point B
this curve can have ONE or TWO points which have a SLOPE of ZERO.
currently im only good with curves that have ONE slope of ZERO
and dont know how the TWO slope ones operate very well.

you define point A with your first mouse click.
you define point B with your last mouse click.

you define the direction of the curve away from
the line which goes from point A to point B
by creating the HANDLE point which is made
after you click on point A by holding the
mouse down and moving it to where the
HANDLE point will be.

the length of the HANDLE line determines how HIGH the curve will be.

if the HANDLE point is EXACTLY between point A and point B the
curve will be a perfect parabolic curve. it the HANDLE is closer
to A then B the curve will lean toward point A.

             H
             | - this curve will be relatively short and symetrical

                     /
/ - this curve will be tall
/ it will lean out past point B
/ the curve will NOT be symetrical
                 /
                /
               /
              /
             /
     A---------------B

in all case i drew the A----B line as a horizantial line.
you can change the line to veritical or any line and the
relation ship between the A----B line and the H handle
stays the same.

mutiple ZERO slope points in the line.
if after clicking on point B you
drag the mouse to create a 2nd handle
for the line the line gets TWO points
with a slope of zero.

to keep this from happening and allow you to draw BOOBS
(very important for mails) hold down the ALT key before
draging the mouse on POINT B
    or
1) draw the 1st curve from point A to point B
2) release the mouse after drawing the line and move the
   mouse away from point B
3) move the mouse back to point B
       click
move mouse to 2nd handle point
       move mouse to point C
       click
now you have a set of boobs ie:

H H (the H's are the HANDLE points)
            ( ) ( )
           ( ) ( )
          ( ) ( )
         ( ) ( )
        ( ) ( )
       ( ) ( )
      A-------------B-------------C

----------------------------------

ALT says to change direction on a curve
you do it so the line does not get a double curve

----------------------------------

to combine 2 lines that you drew seperatly

   1) align the lines so they share 1 point
   2) use SELECTION TOOL (black arrow) to select 1st line
   3) use SHIFT + SELECTION TOOL (black arrow) to select 2nd line
   4) WINDOW

            SCALE
            REFELECT

i think you also have a tool in the TOOL BOX to do this

----------------------------------

to delete a line

      1) select the line with SELECTION TOOL (black arrow)
      2) hit BACKSPACE key to delete the line
(i think you can also use CNTL/X

----------------------------------

to move lines, objects, and pictures around
or to DUPLICATE or COPY lines, objects, and pictures

      1) click on the object with the SELECTION TOOL (black arrow)

      2) to DUPLICATE it now hold down the ALT key (else we move it)

      3) depending on the object either
grab a line on the object
               or
grab the center of the object

and move or copy the object.

when you do a copy you will see 2 parts on the
tool indicating your duplicating and not moving

----------------------------------

to close the path with the PENCIL TOOL (PEN TOOL)?
    1) hold down the ALT key
    2) move pencil to close the path

----------------------------------

PENCIL SMOOTH TOOL - its a PENCIL with a bunch of SPIRALS in it

if you have a line drawn by the PEN TOOL, the PENCIL TOOL
and i suspect other tools used to draw lines
you can move the PENCIL SMOOTH TOOL along the parts of the
line to smooth the line out.

----------------------------------

ERASE TOOL - PENCIL ERASE TOOL

if you have parts of a line drawn with most any of the tools
   PENCIL, PEN, BRUSH
you can use the PENCIL ERASE TOOL to delete or erase parts of the line

 1) select the line with the SELECTION TOOL (black arrow)
 2) use the PENCIL ERASE to delete the parts of theline you dont want

----------------------------------

redrawing parts of a line of path

for lines draw with the PENCIL TOOL or BRUSH TOOL
you can redraw parts of the line by

      1) using the SELECTION TOOL (black arrow to select the line)
      2) using the PENCIL or BRUSH to redraw the parts of the line
         you dont want.

(note by default after drawing a line it STAYS SELECTED
so you can redraw it any time until you SELECT another
      object.

this often fucks you up because when you draw close by
lines you end up redrawing the last line.
you can turn this off by
            1) double click on the TOOLS ICON
            2) their is a box that says SELECTED
click to turn the KEEP SELECTED option off
    )

----------------------------------

brush types
art brush - these draw artwork evenly along a path.
some are charcoal, magic marker, arrow, letters A R T

calligraphic brush - these draw lines that look like chinize writting,
or better yet a calligraphic pen.
you can define how the brush looks.
                          is it rounded or angled?

pattern brushes - pattern brushes are like the rope brush.
they have a bunch of TILES that are displayed
depending on the location of the line.
a BEGIN tile, a END tile, MIDDLE tile for straight
                                                 MIDDLE tile for left turn
                                                 MIDDLE tile for right turn
                                                 blah, blah, ......
pattern brushes will follow the path you draw exactly
which differs from scatter brushes which kinda sorta
                       follow the path you draw.

scatter brushes - scatter an object along a path. such as a
                       leaf, tack, dog tracks, hearts.
scatter brushes dont follow the path exactly which
differs from pattern brushes which follow the
                       path EXACTLY.

just for fun build a brush that looks exactly alike and then
define it as each of the allowed brushes ie:art, calligraphic,
pattern, and scatter and then draw a line with each of them and
    see how the line differs.

----------------------------------

you can use brushes with the paint tool.

you can draw a line with any of the other tools and
then select the brush and have the line drawn with that
brush instead of the tool that drew the line.

    to do this you
          1) draw the line
          2) bring up the brushes palette
and select the brush you want
          3) the line is redraw with that brush

(you can play with the preview button
to see what the line looks like with
             several brushes)

----------------------------------

when you use the paintbrush tool the brush is applied as you draw

when you use other tools which get paint brush stuff applied to them
you

       1) draw a path (such as a straight line or circle)
       2) choose a brush to be applied to the path
(ie the straight line or circle)
       3) at this point the brush is applied to the path.
you can play around and use different brushes to
          see the effects.

----------------------------------

note for any brush you can change
       1) color
       2) size of brush
       3) spacing
       4) scatter
       5) rotation
       6) color
       7) method
       8) many other features like how its applied
you do this by
      1) double clicking on the brush
      2) changing the attributes.

            CLEAR GUIDES

----------------------------------

you can view brushes in the brush palette either by

NAME - which is the name spelled out
PHOTO - a picture of the brush

you can also tell the software to display ONLY or any COMBINATION by brush type
which is
ART - draws a image along the exact path
CALLIGRAPHIC - like paint brush for chinize letters
SCATTER - doesnt follow path exactly and tends to be more random
PATTERN - draws a image that changes depending on the
direction or change of direction of the path
                             and starting or ending.
good example is the ROPE brush which has a
                                  starting picture
                                  ending picture
                                  different pictures depending on
if the rope is twisted or going straight

you choose to view the brushes by NAME or PHOTO and
you choose which types of brushes to view by clicking on the
               >
in the brushes palette. then select NAME, PHOTO, and click on the
brush types you want to see.

----------------------------------

the default is that as you draw with the PAINTBRUSH or PENCIL TOOL
the path your drawing on remains selected and you can go back over it
and change it if you dont like it.

to force the line to stay there DESELECT IT after drawing it.

you can also set the DEFAULT so the line does not stay selected as
you draw it. do this by going
        1) double click paintbrush tool to get its box
        2) click on the X in KEEP SELECTED
        3) click on OK

now the paint brush wont remember its path.
this feature can make you go nuts when you draw
a bunch of lines that are close together because
instead of drawing new lines you end up editing
a line you just drew.

BUT you can still edit the path of any line you have drawn just go

          1) select the line with the SELECTION TOOL (black arrow)
          2) use the PAINTBRUSH or PENCIL tool to edit the line

----------------------------------

to get the SELECTION TOOL (black arrow) with out losing the current tool
         1) hold down CNTL
this will give you SELECTION TOOL (black arrow)
            you can now select stuff
         2) release the CNTL key and you will get your old tool back

----------------------------------

you can use the SELECTION TOOL (black arrow) to draw a box around
a group of items to select just like you do with the magnify tool

----------------------------------

say you have drawn 10 different lines with the paint brush

you want to change the paintbrush for all 10 lines and the color

to do it all automaticly

       1) use SELECTION TOOL (black arrow) to select all 10 lines
       2) move to PAINTBRUSH tool
       3) select a new color to change color of all 10 lines
       4) select new paintbrush to change the stroke of all 10 lines
       5) deselect image to keep the changes

----------------------------------
locking stuff - kinda like using masks in photoshop
im not sure about this but my notes go

we are painting leaves on the tree and dont want to alter the tree
 1) select all parts of the tree with the SELECTION TOOL (black arrow)
 2) go
          OBJECT
             LOCK
 3) now paint the leaves around the tree
 4) when done painting go
          OBJECT
             UNLOCK

----------------------------------

in my case i always draw or paint lines wrong

you can use the DIRECTION SELECTION TOOL (white arrow)

to modify the path of a paint stroke or pencil line

select the line with the DIRECTION SELECTION TOOL (white arrow)
and move the line or the parts of the line around or
the points on the line around.

----------------------------------

you can preview brush strokes and brushes

   1) double click the PAINTBRUSH TOOL to the
the paint brush tool palette up
   2) on the palette click on the
         PREVIEW
box and then you can play with
      different brush strokes, brushes
      and other nonsense

----------------------------------

to cut a line into two parts or two paths or two objects you

   1) use the SCISSORS TOOL to select a point on the line and cut it into two

   2) the line where you cut it now has two points where you cut it with
the SCISSORS TOOL - SISSOR TOOL.

   3) then you take either (my notes are not clear )
the DIRECTION SELECTION TOOL (white arrow)
              SELECTION TOOL (black arrow)
and when the tool gets a little SQUARE by it you
can use it to move the points on the line you
      cut.

note: the SCISSORS TOOL (SISSORS TOOL) is used to cut LINES into two parts
the KNIFE TOOL is used to cut whole objects into two parts

----------------------------------
for many things you can select ALL of the THING
such as selecting ALL brush strokes

     EDIT
       SELECT
         BRUSH STROKES

i think you can select all brush strokes of a certain type
by going

     1) select a brush stroke which you want to grab all
other brush strokes like it with the SELECTION TOOL

     2) now do the

            EDIT
              SELECT
                BRUSH STROKES

to select all brush strokes like the selected brush stroke

----------------------------------

REMEMBER GIMP BRUSH CREATION!!!!!!!!!!

when you create a new paint brush
some paint brushes must be created in BLACK AND WHITE
and they use the colors in the palette when you
       draw with them
other brushes can be created in COLOR and may or may not
use the colors in the palette when drawing

( i think thats why i could not create the brush
to write my name in japanize because i created
the japanize letters in color instead of black and white)

to create a paintbrush

     1) draw the images (probably in black and white)
     2) use the SELECTION TOOL (black arrow) to drag the
        image into the SWATCHES palette
     3) double click on the swatch after you drag it in
        to use it

     4) in the brushes palette at the bottom click on
              NEW BRUSH BUTTON
     5) for a pattern brush select which tile you want
to create (first, last, middle, corner, end)
        click ok

the assholes didnt tell you how to create brushes and said to
either
           1) refer to the HELP MENUS on
              "using the brush librarys"

               or

           2) see the ADOBEW ILLUSTRATOR manual in chapter 3

----------------------------------

lesson 6 - transformations

----------------------------------

to see the transform palette go

        WINDOW
           SHOW TRANSFORM

to select a method to do a transformation from
the transform palette click on the

         >

in the upper right hand corner of the palette
and it will let you select which transformation to do

----------------------------------

                OBJECT
LOCK - deselect & lock and object????

----------------------------------

after you click on the ROTATE TOOL
                       FLIP TOOL
                       SCALE TOOL

or grab the transform tool with

        WINDOW
           SHOW TRANSFORM

you can then CLICK on the screen and select the ORGION POINT for
the transformation. a little circle with crosshairs will show up
where you click.

you can then use the mouse to rotate, flip, or scale around this orgion.

i think a CNTL/CLICK will make the circle with crosshairs disappear.

after you DOUBLE click on the ROTATE TOOL
                              FLIP TOOL
                              SCALE TOOL

in this case the TRANSFORM PALETTE will pop up and
you enter the values to use in it to do the transform

----------------------------------
to show EITHER the X,Y coordinates and rotation of an OBJECT
to see the X,Y coordinates and rotation of an OBJECT as your transforming it

        1) select the object with the selection tool (or transform tool)
        2) click on

               WINDOW
                  SHOW INFO

----------------------------------

to see the CENTER of an object as you mess with it

        1) click on
               WINDOW
                   SHOW ATRIBUTES

        2) a palette will pop up and their is an
unlabled hard to see center button.
click on the button and you will see
           the center of the object

----------------------------------

to deselect 1 item off of a group of selected items click on the item with

SHIFT + GROUP SELECTION TOOL (white arrow with + sign)

----------------------------------

to move an object right after you draw it

       1) draw object
       2) DONT release mouse
       3) hit SPACE BAR
       4) now you can use mouse to move object
(you may have to hold down space bar
           my notes are unclear)

----------------------------------

to convert several objects into one large object
to join several objects together into one object
to merge serveal objects into one object
to convert several images into one large image
to join several images together into one image
to merge serveal images into one image

        1) select all the objects you want to join
               (SELECTION TOOL for 1st one
SHIFT + SELECTION for 2nd thru last objects)
        2) click on
                OBJECT
                  GROUP

        3) now you can do operation on all the objects combined

to remove an object from a grouped object

       1) use GROUP SELECTION TOOL (white arrow with + sign)

       2) now with SHIFT click on the object you want to remove

----------------------------------

to rotate, shear, resize, more an image or object

        1) click on the object to select it

        2) in the transform palette use

             a) /\ to enter degrees to rotate
               ----

             b) use H/W to enter new Height or Width

             c) use X/Y to move object to new x/y coordinates

                     __
             d) use / / to enter degrees to shear the object
                    --

shearing is a big word for moving one side of the
object at an angle. look at the picture thats
                what shearing does

in the transform box you have a picture that looks like this

click on the corner or button which will be used for the orgion
of the transformation. ie:center is middle x. x on the upper right
corner will use the upper right corner of the object as the orgion.

or you can click on the screen and get a circle with crosshairs to
use for an origion instead, (i think cntl/click removes the circle with crosshairs)

----------------------------------

i as confused how to switch between drawings or picturs when you are editing serveral photos

in adobe illustrator you switch between drawings or documents with

           WINDOW
                l6c.ai
                l6e.ai
l6l.ai - it has the name of each document your editing here.
nude_lady.ai - click on the one you want to go edit again
                drawing.ai
                photo.ai

----------------------------------
use this for the fija - liberatarian - fully informed jury association card im designing
to duplicate a document 8 times on a screen or
to put a document in 4 corners of the page
(this is on pages 179 & 180 of my adobe illustrator book)

   1) select the stuff you want to copy

   2) go OBJECT
                    TRANSFORM
                        TRANSFORM EACH

   3) enter the value to duplicate the image to the left as

          say

             +4.25

         in

              MOVE HORIZANTAL
         box
     or

              -5.5

         in

              MOVE VERTICAL

         box

when you hit enter or CNTL/D the image is duplicated to the right
or down. in the case where we made 16 business cards we used i
think CNTL/D to duplicate the image 7 times down on one side
and then 7 more times on the other side

to grab a copy of a windows screen do the following
to grab a copy of a screen do the following
to do a windows screen print or windows screen capture do the following
windows screen capture commands are displayed next
how to capture a windows screen is explained next
to print a windows screen CNTL/PRINT SCREEN no longer works
to print a windows screen do it like this
  1) click on the window or screen you want to capture or print
(im guessing to get the whole terminal click on an unused
     part of the window

  2) hit ALT/PRINT SCREEN
this captures the image of the screen as a bit mapped image
just like CNTL/C captures highlited text this captures the selecte screen

  3) go into any application that allows you to past bit mapped
images (at rio salado pv mall we used photo shop, i suspect
that the windows paint program would also work) and use
          CNTL/V
     to paste the screens image

 4) now use photoshop or your paint program to print the windows screen
you can paste captured screens into
adobe photoshop - save as anything .gif .jpg .jpeg
adobe illustrator - didnt try saving
microsoft imaging - save as .bmp or .tif .tiff
microsoft paint - save as .gif

you can display and modify the font and size of text with the TYPE PALETTE
to view the TYPE PALETTE this will toggle it and display/delete the TYPE PALETTE

    TYPE
       CHARACTER

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

the TRANSFORM PALETTE is used in rotating, changing the size of objects,
                      and distorting objects.

the TRANSFORM PALETTE is next to the PATHFINDER PALETTE

the PATHFINDER PALETTE allows you to merge or slice up objects based
or where they intersect, or based on which
object is on top or which object is on bottom.
it also can change the color of objects.
usually it keeps the color of the object on top
but it can be used to play games with color.

the PATHFINDER PALETTE is next to the TRANSFORM PALETTE
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

when you use the paint brush took the brush is applied as you draw.

when you use other tools you

  1) draw the path
  2) choose the brush to apply to the path
you can change the color, size and other features
on the brush and preview what it will look like
     when drawn around the image
  3) at this point the brush is applied to the path

so you can

   1) draw a circle, square, bezier curve (beizer curve spelled wrong)
or use any other tool to create an image

   2) i think while the image is still selected
click on the paint brush tool

   3) select the paint brush to apply to the bath around
      the image you just drew.
you can select the penis paint brush to draw penis
around the image, the tit paint brush, the butterfly
      paint brush and so on
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
viewing the paint brushes
you can view the different brushes in the brushes palette
by NAME of the brush spelled out
         PICTURE of the brush
to change the viewing method select the |> triangle in the
brushes palette and change to either NAME or PICTURE

you can also select what type of brushes to display and display
all brushes or brushes of 1 or more types which are
          ART
          CALLIGRAPHIC
          PATTERN
          SCATTER
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
the default is to allow you to modify you paint brush stroke while
its selected any time until you deselect it by either
       deselecting it
         or
       drawing a new brush stroke

you can just click on and drag around the existing brush stroke

this often makes you go nuts if your trying to draw several brush
strokes close together because you often end up editing your
last stroke instead of drawing a new stroke close by.

you can turn this feature off to keep your self from going nuts by
going

      1) double click the paint brush tool box

      2) click the X in KEEP SELECTED
         to turn this option off

      3) click on OK to save the change

not the paint brush wont remember the last path you drew
and will instead allow you to draw a bunch of brush strokes
that over lap with out editing your prior brush strokes

BUT you can still edit the path of existing brush stroke by

     1) select the brush stroke with the SELECT TOOL
     2) use the paint brush tool to modify the brush stroke

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
IMPORTANT - to use the SELECT tool while using some other tool and
then return to the other tool
(as in the case of editing a paint brush stroke)

   use
        CNTL
to toggle you to the SELECT TOOL

   select what ever you want

when you release the CNTL key
you will be returned to the prior tool

i didnt know this but you can also use the SELECT TOOL to draw a box
around a bunch of items you want and select them all at once just
like you use the MAGNIFY TOOL to draw a box around an area you want to
see.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

to change the attributes of a paint brush (brush size, brush spacing, color, rotation, method)

  1) open the BRUSHES PALETTE
  2) double click on the brush you wnat to modify
  3) enter the new values for brush size, spacing, scatter, rotation, color, or method

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

when you dont want to paint over stuff
(like when we were painting leaves on the tree
we did not want to modify the structure of the trunk)

you can lock the items you dont want to modify,
then paint over the locked items

    1) select parts of item you dont want to modify with SELECT TOOL
    2) lock the selecte items with
         OBJECT
            LOCK

    3) now you can paint over the locked object with out modifying
       the locked object.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

to select ALL brush strokes and modify ALL of them go

   EDIT
     SELECT
      BRUSH STROKES

you can get picky and only select brush strokes with
certain attributes such as
only green brush strokes done with the foo brush stroke that are 5 points

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
you can use the SISSORS TOOL to cut lines into too parts
(like lines drawn with the paint brush, pencil, bezier tool)

    1) slice line in two with SISSORS TOOL

    2) at this point looks the same but its sliced in two

    3) use DIRECT SELECTION TOOL (white arrow) go grab the point
just sliced (it will have a square by it when its over
the point you want to grab)

    4) grab the point of the line you just sliced and move it
       to a new location.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

selecting several items or objects at once
selecting more then one item or object at once

two ways to do it

      a) use the SELECT TOOL to draw a square around all the objects
         you want to select

      b) use SELECT TOOL to select 1st item
use SHIFT/SELECT TOOL to select other items
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
begin TYPE TOOL - i fucked up and didnt keep my notes straight so the stuff
here on the TYPE TOOL is disorganized

in my notes i even put
read TYPE TOOL chapter over and take better notes.

if you have images imbedded in the document this will
show you where the images are. they can be in the document
or can just be another file that is pointed to by a path.
in this case if you delete or remove the external images
you ai document will lose them

WINDOW

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

to add text into a document you can

     1) type it in manually

     2) cut and past it in with cntl/c and cntl/v
        which are
                                EDIT EDIT
                                  COPY PASTE

     3) import text or word files.
i think it supports word .doc files
it supports RICH TEXT, or RICH TEXT FORMAT files
which can be created with word and end in .rtf

this rich text format supports itallics and bold
and other stuff. its the format i used to create
the libertarian/fija sheets to hand out on mill

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

to set the font and character size display the CHARACTER PALETTE
its much easier picking the font here then from the

        TYPE
          FONT

to display the character palette go

        TYPE
          CHARACTER

in the character palette are

LEADING - amount of space between lines
KERNING - space between 2 characters
TRACKING - spacing in a string of characters ?
im not sure what that means. but i typed
it up any how cuz thats what the book says

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

you can enter text via

1) you can use the TYPE TOOL to draw a box the same way you
draw a box with the MAGNIFY or SELECT TOOL and then
you can enter text into the box you drew with the
   TYPE TOOL

after doing this you can divide the area you selected
with the TYPE TOOL into rows and columns with

            TYPE
              ROWS & COLUMNS
                 (now a box pops up)
enter # ROWS and # columns
                 click OK

2) you can click on a point with the TYPE TOOL and then enter
   text at that point.

3) after entering text you can change the
        JUSTIFICATION
        FONT SIZE
        FONT TYPE

you highlight the text you want to change with the mouse.
the PARAGRAPH PALETTE is used to change the JUSTIFICATION

4) you can use the EYE DROPPER TOOL to get font size and name of the font
by touching the EYE DROPPER TOOL on to the TEXT

if you select a string of text line
        ABCDEFG
you can then use the EYE DROPPER TOOL
to change the font type, and font size of
        ABCDEFG
to the font of some other string of text by
clicking on the other text with the EYEDROPPER TOOL

5) when you use the TYPE TOOL it has a thing that looks like this

\/ - the bottom of the V is where the top of each
       | capital letter would touch.
       |
       |
___ - this is were the bottom of each letter goes
/\ j's and g's would hang below this line

i think the stuff above the lower part of \/ is white space
same for the stuff below the /\ on the bottom
execpt the lower part of letters like j,g would
                also go there.

6) to place text into an area from a disk file

     a) draw the area you want to place the text into with
the TYPE TOOL (like you use the magnifying glass)

     b) click inside the area with the TYPE TOOL
to tell it to put the text there

     c) go FILE
                PLACE
(enter file name that contains the text)

7) to show hidden characters in text go

        TYPE
           SHOW HIDDEN

this is nice to show things line NEW LINES or NEW PARAGRAPHS

8) to select a PARAGRAPH of text TRIPLE CLICK on the PARAGRAPH

9) in the character palette you have a PARAGRAPH OPTION

   you can use it to
          RIGHT JUSTIFY lines
          LEFT JUSTIFY lines
JUSTIFY FULL LINEs - this makes it like printers do
so each line begins and ends at
the same place. it doesnt justify
                               short lines (which are usually
the last line of a paragraph) so
the last line if it ended in one
                               word of
                                        DOG
would not be justified and look like
                               DOG
(see next example for the ugly dog)
JUSTIFY ALL LINES - this does the same as FULL LINES
execpt really short lines look bad
like a line with one word in it of
                                          DOG
                               would look like
                               D O G
          CENTER

you can also use it to set the space between paragraphs.

so it only saves colors that can be displayed on web
and so it saves at 72 lines per inch which is what
             people use on internet.
this option reduces file size so sending it over

adobe illustrator - chapter 9 notes

pathfinder palette is used to
    combine shapes
    divide shapes
    blend colors
    hard mix color blend
    soft mix color blend

combine - build new objects based on intersection of objects
isolate - build new objects based on intersection of objects
subdivide - build new objects based on intersection of objects

the object created by the pathfinder palette usually takes on the color of the top object

the pathfinder palette is next to the transform palettte
the pathfinder palette is next to the align palettte

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

to make a copy of something on top of itself
  1) select the thing you want to copy
  2) hit EDIT
            COPY
  3) hit EDIT
            PASTE IN FRONG

this is usefull when you want to make a copy of an image
which will be used as a self destruting template when the
pathfinder chopping/cutting commands are finished.
the book had a real good exersize where this was done
it was this

we wanted to copy 1/4 of a round gear on top of
     a square image. so we

     1) duplicated the square image on to its self
     2) did an INTERSECT COMMAND with the gear and
square image which we had just duplicated.

this returned only the image where the
        gear and square image overlapped.

(this was the self destruct part of the operation)

     3) we left the new image on top of the
        square image.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

UNITE COMMAND/TOOL - 1st top row command
merges all selected objects into one object
deletes any objects inside the object
uses paint attributes of top object

MINUS FRONT COMMAND/TOOL- ?2nd button top row
removes all top objects from the bottom object.

in our case we had a bunch of holes placed on a bicycle
gear and we used the top holes cause holes to be placed
                in the bicycle gear.

after using this tool only the bicycle gear remained
and it had holes in it which were caused when the
top objects were removed from it.

EXCLUDE COMMAND/TOOL - 3nd button top row

                would be better named
"DELETE ANY AREAS THAT OVER LAP, KEEP WHAT DOESNT OVERLAP"

any areas that INTERSECT are DELETED.
any areas that DONT intersect are KEPT

INTERSECT COMMAND/TOOL - 2nd button on the ?top/bottom?
only areas that INTERSECT are kept
areas that dont intersect are DELETED

TRIM COMMAND/TOOL - 2nd button on the bottom
                1) it doesnt join any objects
                2) it doesnt delete any objects
                3) it removes all the stuff on the bottom object
that is covered by objects on top of it
                4) the objects on top are not deleted and you
have to move the bottom object to see the
                   holes cut in it.

a good example of this command was

we wanted to cut a star shaped hole in a square object.

we placed the star object on top of the square object

then we used the TRIM TOOL to cut a star shaped hole in
        the bottom square object.

last we removed the star object so you could see the star shaped
        hole cut in the square.

SOFT MIX COMMAND/TOOL - 3rd row middle button - you need to use the |>
in the pathfinder palette to see the 3nd row
                           of commands

        1) it combines objects
        2) the top object becomes semi transparent so
you can see lower objects thru it.
        3) you specify a % transparent you want

HARD MIX COMMAND/TOOL - 3rd row 1st button - you need to use the |>
in the pathfinder palette to see the 3nd row
                           of commands

with the HARD MIX TOOL you can still see both objects.
but it merges the objects using the highest amount of
        color

AREA 1 AREA 2 merged object

             cyan 20% 40% 40% (from area 2)
             magenta 66% 20% 66% (from area 1)
             yellow 40% 30% 40% (from area 1)
             black 0% 10% 10% (from area 2)

i dont know how to say the HARD MIX TOOL is different then the SOFT MIX TOOL

DIVIDE COMMAND/TOOL - 1st button 2nd row

it slices up the objects along all lines where they interset.
you get lots of objects from this command

useless info on how to divide objects with the pen tool

        1) turn fill color off
        2) turn stroke color off
        3) use pen tool to draw lines where object will be divided
        4) use DIVIDE TOOL to divide the object up
        5) since all color was off with the PEN TOOL you dont
get any color when you use the DIVIDE TOOL to slice and dice

when using the DIVIDE TOOL its often easier to see the results with

           VIEW
             ARTWORK | PREVIES

you can use the GROUP SELECTION TOOL to move divided objects around

blending shapes and colors - chapter 8
morphing one shape into another - ie:blending - BLEND TOOL
morphing one shape into another in 6 different steps - ie:blending - BLEND TOOL
applying a gradient to a object - GRADIENT TOOL
applying a gradient to text - GRADIENT TOOL

not covered in the book (it was but i missed it 1st time) was a
SMOOTH COLOR BLEND

it takes 2 objects say a RED SQUARE and a BLUE CIRCLE located in
different locations and converts them into one object that
starts with the RED SQUARE and with a graident turns into a
BLUE CIRCLE

RED STAR -->--(transformed into )-----> BLUE CIRCLE

to do this
         1) double click on BLEND TOOL
         2) select SMOOTH COLOR
         3) click on OK
         4) with the BLEND TOOL click on RED STAR
         5) with the BLEND TOOL click on BLUE CIRCLE
at this point the 2 objects will be blended
         6) you could blend in another object say a YELLOW TRIANGLE
            by again clicking on it.
or you can terminate the blending by clicking on the BLEND TOOL in the TOOL BOX

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

a different method to blend 2 object into one like above is to

  1) select both object you want to blend (RED STAR & BLUE CIRCLE)
  2) go OBJECT
            BLENDS
               BLEND OPTIONS
                   SMOOTH COLOR
  3) click on OK
  4) go OBJECT
            BLENDS
               MAKE

(at this point the 2 objects will be blended)

  5) if you fuck up you can undo it with

         OBJECT
            BLENDS
               RELEASE
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
blending in steps
      say you want to convert
a circle that turns into a square in 20 steps like

          O []
                     to
          OOOOOOOO0000000O[][][][][][][][]

  1) select the 2 object you want to merge in 20 steps, n steps or whatever
with the SELECT TOOL & SHIFT/SELECT TOOL

  2) double click the BLEND TOOL to get the blend palette

  3) enter SPECIFIC STEPS
enter the number of steps as 20, n, or whatever
     click on OK

blend is now down and you have 20 objects that blend into each other

i may have lied and you have to do it this way

   1) double click BLEND TOOL to get blend palette
   2) select SPECIFIC STEPS
   3) enter 20 fornumber steps
   4) click on OK
   5) with BLEND TOOL click on starting object
   6) with BLEND TOOL click on ending object
blend is now done and there is 20 steps of the object
between the starting and ending object
   7) you can blend in another object or
click on the BLEND TOOL in the TOOL box to do a different blend

modifying the direction of the BLEND LINE

normally when you blend 2 objects into 20 objects its done in a straight line.
you can take the straight line of 22 and twist it into a curved line, or
twist it into any type of line you want.

1) you may have to select the blendend thing with the SELECT TOOL
i dont know if i forgot to write that down, but maybe you dont
2) next use the "CONVERT DIRECTION POINT TOOL" (its stored in the PEN's tool box)

3) now you can grab any point on the line and move it
you can grab the handles which are on each and every point and twist
   the handles

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

say you morphed a CIRCLE (1) to a SQUARE (6) in 4 steps.
and you wanted to reverse the order.

        1 2 3 4 5 6

           becomes

        6 5 4 3 2 1

after the blend is done go

   OBJECTS
       BLENDS
          REVERSE SPLINE

or you can probably select the morphed object and
also do the above. im just guessing. i dont know

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
i really didnt understand this part too good, or maybe i didnt play
with it enought.

in the chili bowl drawing we morphed a RED DIAMOND into a BLUE CIRCLE.

now were going to change the shape of the RED DIAMOND into a RED TRIANGLE
so morph changes from DIAMOND to TRIANGLEA

1) select RED DIAMOND

2) use DELETE ANCHOR POINT TOOL (pen with minus sign on it - )
click on top point of diamond to delete it and change it into a triangle

3) now use DIRECT SELECTION TOOL (white SELECTION TOOL) to move
the points of the triange around changings it size.
this causes other parts of the morphed string to be change

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

filling an object with a gradient (which can be two or MORE colors)

1) use the SELECT TOOL to pick the object to be filled with a graident
2) click on the gradient tool, double click to get the gradient palette
3) click on the triangle |> in the gradient palette
   and then click on
        SHOW OPTIONS
   to see everything
(the default gradient is black and white)
4) click on the gradient bar to get 2 color stops

if you want 3 or more gradient colors grab the gradient bar
with the mouse where you want the new color and pull down.
a new color stop will pop up.

to delete a color stop grab the color stop with the mouse and
pull down ripping the color stop off

5) to set the color of the color stops - which set the gradient colors
   a) click on the color stop
   b) click on the color you want in the color swatches or color palette
   c) click on the color stop
then click on the EYE DROPPER TOOL
and use it to select a color from your drawing
6) you use the GRADIENT TOOL to draw the direction of the gradient
and set where the starting and stopping colors are

it works slightly different for RADICAL GRADIENTS and LINERA GRADIENTS

and the best way is to draw a short line, followed by a long line
and see how the effects vary. but once you see it the rules are
   very easy.

   RADIAL GRADIENTS

        a) your first mouse click is always the CENTER of the CIRCLE in the graident
        b) your final mouse click is were the gradient ends.
from that point outward everything will be the same color
           as your final gradient color.

the gradient range will be spread from the center of the circle
           to your final click.

beyond the final click everything has the ending color of the gradient

   LINEAR GRADIENTS

       a) the 1st click is where your begining color starts
everything in the object before the 1st click is
the same color as the starting gradient color

       b) the second click is where the ending color is placed.
everything in the object after the ending click is
the same color as the ending click

       c) the direction of linear gradiaent is by the direction
of the 1st and 2nd clicks

7) you can save the colors of a gradient in the swatches palette
       a) click on the color box in the gradient palette
       b) drag the color to the swatches box or swatches palette

you can use the gradient from the swatches palette by going
       a) alt/click on the square color stop in the gradient palette
       b) click on the gradient color in the swatches palette to make
          it the active gradient color

8) the dots (triangles) above the gradient bar tell where the middle of 2 colors are
you can drage the top triangles to change where the middle of the colors are

you can add a mesh gradient to any object
a mess gradient is a big word for shades or shawdow ing to make an object look 3d or 3 dimensional
its kinda of like a 3d gradient

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

to add random mesh gradient points to a object
(as opposed to adding a grid of mesh points on the object - which is covered next)

 0) you may or may not have to select the object with the SELECT tool

 1) select the MESH GRADIENT TOOL

 2) where you want a mesh point on the object click with the MESH GRADIENT TOOL
it uses the current FILL color to make the mesh gradient
if you want a different FILL color click on the
color palette or swatches palette after creating the point

 3) to add a 2nd mesh point click on the point with the MESH GRADIENT TOOL
to change the color click on the color or swatches palette after
    creating the mesh point

 4) play with the colors and stuff. you can do weird things

 5) you can use the DIRECT SELECTION TOOL (white arrow) to move mesh points around
after you have created the mesh points.
each mesh point also has a pair of handles like the points created by the pen tool for beizer biezer bezier curvers
you can twist, and adjust the lenght of the two handles on each mesh
point with the DIRECT SELECTION TOOL

to add grid of mesh gradient points to a object
(as opposed to random mesh points on the object - which was covered just before this)

you can create a gradient mesh with say 5 rows and 9 columns of mesh points on it

the bowl being the low point and the edges of
the bolw being the high points
to edge - gives the effect of an island rising out of the sea
the center of the object appears higher like a mountain
the edges of the object appear lower like the beaches on an island
          enter % highlight
                  100% - gives BLACK to WHITE effect or COLOR1 -> COLOR2
50% - give GREY to GREY effect or
where the colors are translucant and
not as 100% as the 100% effect
10% - i could not see any effect this low
i guess i have to play with it.
or the change is so subtile i didnt see it

CLICK OK - to see gradient mesh appear

 3) at this point we have the mess on the object
not we apply the colors to the object

 4) deselect the object

    now we can TWEEK either
          any MESH POINT
          a line of MESH POINTS
any MESH which is the area bounded by 4 MESH POINTS

 5) with the DIRECT SELECTION TOOL (white arrow) click in the center of any MESH
(thats an area bounded by say 4 mesh points)

not click in the color box or swatches palette
to apply that color to the mesh

 6) instead of selecting a mesh to apply the color to
you can select 1 mesh point or a line of mesh points
    to apply the color to.

in this case the color radiates from the center of the mesh point or
from the center of the mesh line

use the DIRECT SELECTION TOOL to select the 1st point

use the SHIFT/DIRECT SELECT TOOL to select the rest of the points on the line
note the line does not have to be straight

after defining the line click on the color to apply to the mesh line

NOTES: if you select a MESH the color is applied to the MESH and
and area slightly outside the MESH

if you select a MESH POINT or a line of MESH POINTS the color
is applied around the center of the MESH POINT or
center of the line of MESH POINTS

NOTES:you can also use the DIRECT SELECT TOOL to draw a line around
several points you want to select in the mesh and then apply
      color to them

after grabbing one set of mesh points you can get more mesh points
      with SHIFT/DIRECT SELECTION TOOL

NOTES: every mesh point has a set of direction handles on it like the
curve points drawn by the pen tool.
you can use the DIRECT SELECTION TOOL to
             move the handles around
change the length of the handles
you can also use the DIRECT SELECTION TOOL to move the mesh points around
to move the point is perfect 90, 45, 0 degree directions use SHIFT
like you do with all other tooks to limit the moves to 90 degree angles

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

to change the color on a mesh point
      1) use the GRADIENT MESH TOOL (not the DIRECT SELECTION TOOL) ot
         click on the mesh point.
wait for the + to go away then your centered and can click
      2) click on the new color

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

to delete a mesh point

      1) use the ALT/GRADIENT MESH TOOL to click on the point
the point and the 2 intersecting rows will be deleted

to delete a mesh line (a line of mesh points not a single point)

      1) use ALT/GRADIENT MESH TOOL
         hold over line and click

to add 1 mesh point to a grid of mesh points

      1) do it the same way you add random mesh points to anything
click where you want the mesh point with the GRADIENT MESH TOOL

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

i didnt understand this note but

you can add single anchor points to the mesh with the ADD ANCHOR POINT TOO
(its the pen tool with a plus)
