Hawker Tempest Mk.V

    skins for CFS3

The CAC Tempest skin required an enormous modification job of the stock CFS3 Tempest skin. After getting rid of the 'abominable bright white' spinner, stripes around the wings, tips of tail planes and the fuselage stripe, it became obvious that the entire starboard side of the Tempest's camouflage was merely a mirrored version of what was correctly rendered on the port side. From above, the dark green portions of the camouflage formed what looked a bit like a big 'W'. It looked silly and just totally false. After many days of painstaking 'surgery' and serious restoration work, much of it pixel by pixel, I was able to convert all of the camouflage pattern on the port side so that it was no longer a mirror of the starboard side.

1. Stock skin with abominable white bits.          2. White bits gone, but mirrored camouflage.

                             3. Camouflage unmirrored, new roundels

   4. Underside with new roundels.                         5. D-Day invasion stripes

The fin flashes were a little too narrow on the stock skins, these have been widened somewhat. All the wing roundels on the stock skin are a little small and placed too far aft. I have added some new ones. I like to include red/green navigation lights on the wing tips of all of my skins. Most of the stock CFS3 skins omit them. When I got the specular skin for the Tempest done with the areas around the wing tip lights highlighted, I finally noticed that the model file picks up the port and starboard sides of the under wing textures reversed and mirrored! This meant the colours of the wing tip lights were on the wrong wing on the undersurfaces. This meant a further update to all the CAC Tempest V skins was required.

It is recommended that you download and install the 'CACforCFS3 Tempest specular skin' (tempest_mkv_s.dds) so this new skin's roundels and wing tip navigation lights are highlighted correctly. It is available below.

Note: The colour of the whip aerial behind cockpit is always determined by what colour the spinner is painted. Both parts of the model have been allocated the same part of the dds texture file.

   Specular Skin for CAC Tempests

Most of the roundels have had their size and position altered on these Tempest skins, I have altered the stock specular dds file accordingly. Roundel highlighting will occur in the right place if you add this to your Tempest Mk.V folder. Wing tip lights will show up a little better as well.
