Figurative Language
Writers often compare things that the reader is unfamiliar with to things that he or she may know. This is called figurative language. It helps you figure it out and visualize the writer's intent.

Figurative language ~ 3 Common Types |
A simile uses the words like or as to
compare two different things. Ex. 0, My luve's like a red, red rose... Robert Burns
A metaphor is a more directly implied comparison
that does not use like or as. Ex. You are my sunshine, cool.
| A personification gives human characteristics or qualities to nonhuman things such as animals or objects. Ex. The
lion cub sneered in my face.
