Figurative Language

Writers often compare things that the reader is unfamiliar with to things that         he or she may know.  This is called figurative language.  It helps you figure it      out and visualize the writer's intent.

Figurative language                                 ~                          3 Common Types

A simile uses the words like or as to compare two different things.      

Ex. 0, My luve's like a red, red rose... Robert Burns  

                                                            

A metaphor is a more directly implied comparison that does not use like or as.

Ex. You are my sunshine, cool.                

                                                            

 

A personification gives human characteristics or qualities to nonhuman things such as animals 

or objects.  Ex. The lion cub sneered in my face.
