Influences

I suppose this is really just a page were I tell you which bands I think are worth listening to. Well I guess the first band to really influence me musically would have to be the Beatles and there are probably very few musicians out there who wouldn't say the same thing. Though I probably only really became keen on being in a band when Nirvana broke onto the scene. They reminded you that you don't need to be a guitar wizard to make music, you just needed to know three chords and have passion.

Other bands that came about at the same time that are definitely worth a listen to are The Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails.

Add to that collection the genius of Frank Black and the Pixies, not to mentioned the other associated bands like the Breeders, Throwing Muses, Belly and various solo career projects by Kristen Hersh, Tanya Donelly and of course Frank Black.

I own every single REM album. Those guys never cease to amaze with their ability to still be producing hit songs after twenty years of doing it.

You should own at least one Sonic Youth album and one Fugazi album.

Leonard Cohen is the king of depression and how to wallow in it, and Morrissey certainly tries.

Buy The Wall by Pink Floyd and listen to Joy Division at least once, though make sure you put all sharp objects way out of reach before you do.

If you can, get hold of an album my South African group Amersham. They wrote some damn good melodies and apparently I sound like their lead singer.

The best way to find a some new and interesting music is too look who influenced your favourite musicians. You might just find a few gems.
