A remarkable album, God Candy proves, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that Jonathan isn't just a brilliant, award winning actor, but a phenomenal singer/songwriter/musician. Developing the sounds and ideas only hinted at on Clash, God Candy jumps light years forward as Jonathan develops his own sound and technique. His guitar work is precise and skilled for one so young. His voice, sometimes weak and stretching on Clash, is vibrant and strong and, as future performances of God Candy songs show, getting even stronger. Lyrically, the album is a story about a young man's journey from romantic love to spiritual love. A concept album in the orignal sense of the word, God Candy has something for everyone.

It is nearly impossible to pick a standout group of songs, every song has an amazing tune with deep lyrics and great musicianship. "Away" and "God Candy" are beautiful ballads with aching vocals, the stripped down back of the title track and the searing guitars on "Away" add to the beauty of the songs. "Coffee and Tea" and "Show and Tell" are driving rock songs with vastly different messages and feel, yet the same energy and passion that drives the album. "Cranes Roost" and "Wounded Guide" are told two different people, yet convey messages of loss, and sorrow, regret and a hope for something more. I could go on for days about "Only When the Rain Slips In," "Trip If You Have To," etc., because every last song has a special place in my heart and my head.
