The Michigan Lilies are in glorious bloom for the first time in many a year. Although they did bloom last year they weren't pretty, probably because they got sprayed (accidentally?) with Tordon early in the season. The plants were found in the woods on the north end of the property. They were dug up and kept in pots for 2-3 years and then planted along a ditch in the upper power line area. The first year the flower buds were eaten off, presumably by deer, so the plants were fenced off.

American Lady (Vanessa virginensis) nectaring on slender mountain-mint. This species is fairly common this year. It can be distinguished from Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui) by the presence of two eyespots on the lower hind wing while Painted Lady has four.
