The neurotransmitters serotin and norepinephrine, which function abnoramally in people who have depression, have been discovered to also have decreased levels in both acutley-ill Anorexia and Bulimia patients, and long-term recovered Anorexia patients. ~Research has shown that some patients with Anorexia may respond well to anti-depressants that affects the amount of serotonin levels in the body. ~People with anoreixia, or certain forms of depression, seem to have higher then normal levels of cortisol, a brain hormone realeased in repose to stress. It has also been shown that excess levels of critisol in both perosons with anorexia and in persons with depression are caused by a problem that occurs in, or near, the hypothalamus in the brain. ~Biochemical similarities have been discovered between people with Eating Disorders and obsessive-compulisive disorder (OCD), and other patients with OCD frequently have abnormal eating habits. ~The hormone vasopressin is another brain chemical found to be abnormalin people with Eating Disorders and OCD. Levels of this hormone are elevated in pateients with OCD, Anorexia and Bulimia. |
