Department of Computer & Information Sciences

University of Hyderabad

The Department of Computer & Information Sciences is a part of School of Mathematics and Computer/Information Sciences.

The Department of Computer and Information Sciences offers high quality post-graduate teaching and research programmes in all major areas of Computing Sciences, Information Sciences and Artificial Intelligence. Current research areas include Computer Vision, Parallel Algorithms, Combinatorial Algorithms, Geographical Information Systems, Neural Computing, Natural Language Processing & Machine Translation, Text Processing, Machine Learning, Speech Processing, Document Analysis, Database, Expert Systems, Artificial Intelligence, Distributed AI, Decision Support Systems and Software Engineering.

PROGRAMMES OF STUDY

The Department offers programmes of study leading to Master of Technology (M.Tech) in two streams - Computer Science & Artificial Intelligence. It also offers Master of Computer Applications (MCA).
In all the courses classroom teaching is supplemented with seminars, term papers, minor projects and assignments.

M. Tech. (Computer Science)

This is a three semester course including two semesters of course work and one semester of project work. This program is meant for graduates in engineering disciplines and post-graduates in related sciences. And as such it includes both fundamental topics and advanced topics for specialization.

M. Tech. (Artificial Intelligence)

This is also a three semester course including two semesters of course work and one semester of project work. This program is meant for students already well equipped in computing sciences and as such imparts advanced training in all the major areas of Artificial Intelligence and other emerging technologies.

M.C.A.

This programme aims to prepare graduates in all the major areas of computer science and also in relevant aspects of mathematics and management, so that they can take up both technical and managerial positions in industry. The training is rigorous and involves five semesters of course work and one semester of project work.

Ph.D.

The Ph.D. programme is offered on full time, part time and external registration basis as per the university regulations. An idea about the areas of research can be obtained from the department objectives and faculty profile.

INFRASTRUCTURAL FACILITIES

The departmental facilities include a well equipped laboratory called A. I. Lab and Hardware Lab. The A.I. Lab houses a variety of computing machines including SUN Work-stations, Pentium based Multi-Media Personal Computers running Linux, Windows NT, Windows 95 etc., all equipped with latest software packages. The A.I. Lab also includes specialized equipment for processing images, speech and multi-lingual text. These facilities are also continually augmented through funded research projects as well as industrial consultancy. Apart from the departmental facilities there is also a well equipped University Computer Center.
