COMPUTER RESOURCES



COMPUTATIONAL RESOURCES IN SCHOOL OF PHYSICS
M.Tech(CT) students have been provided with seven dedicated PCs ( Four Pentium II-MMX & three Pentium 4) making Students to Computer ratio 1:1. Four of these have Windows operating system & the remaining have Windows as well as Linux installed on it. All PCs are equipped with C/C++/Java/Fortran compilers, MatLab, Origin, Veriwell and other softwares. Besides, one PC is connected to the Internet.

Most of the of PCs of the School are networked through LAN with the computer center so that Internet and E-mail facilities are directly accessible from laboratories and faculty offices. The school receives external support from UGC, CSIR, DST, DAE and DOE for research work.

THE COMPUTER CENTER
The Computer Center is a central facility and caters to the computational needs of the students and the staff of the University. It has several Network work-stations from all major vendors equipped with the required compilers and other softwares such as IMSL routines and Mathematica. Most of the Schools/Departments of the University are networked through Ethernet to all the above systems. The University of Hyderabad is connected to the Internet via VSAT. The University is one of the transit nodes of Education and Research and Network. High speed link will soon be provided by ERNET to the University. The Center is run by a number of operators, programmers, system programmers, system managers, system analysts and is headed by a Director. The Computer Center runs round the clock i.e., 365 days a year with a few holidays.

The students of the M.Tech(CT) can avail many of the facilities from the Computer Center.

COMPUTATIONAL RESOURCES IN DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER/INFO SCIENCES
The Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (A.I. Lab) of Department of Computer Sciences houses a variety of computing machines including SUN Workstations, Pentium based Multi-Media Personal Computers running Linux, Windows NT, Windows 95 etc., all equipped with latest software packages. The A.I. Lab also includes specialized equipment for processing images, speech and multi-lingual text. These facilities are also continually augmented through funded research projects as well as industrial consultancy.

The students doing their Projects/Mini-projects/Term-Paper under the faculty of Department of Computer Science can avail the facilities of the A. I. Lab.

INDIRA GANDHI MEMORIAL LIBRARY




University Library is a central facility to support the teaching and research needs of the University. The library has been, over the years successfully catering to the needs of all the schools of Sciences, Social Sciences, Humanities and Management Studies. A library unit has been functioning at the "Golden Threshold" to cater to the needs of S.N.School of Performing Arts, Fine Arts and Communication. National Board of Higher Mathematics (NBHM) has recognized this library as "Regional Library" for mathematics. This library has the distinction of being the first University Library in India to computerize all its activities and also provide computer terminals(OPAC) to the users with network access across the Campus-wide Local Area Network(LAN).

THE COLLECTION
The Library collection includes 2,53,000 volumes and 670 current periodicals, over 50 popular magazines and 25 newspapers. Library has several CD-ROM and Multi-media products.Plans are drawn to acquire CD-ROM products in various disciplines over a period and save resources and also share the resources with other libraries. Inter-Library Loan service supplements its stock by obtaining materials from other libraries on demand from the users. The library is an Institutional member of NIRD.

THE MEMBERSHIP
Library membership is open to the faculty, research scholars, students and non-teaching staff of this University. The students of M.Tech(and other PG courses) can borrow maximum of five books at a time for a period of fifteen days. The books could be renewed if there is no demand for the book.
All the registered members are issued a Bar-Coded membership card for all transactions in the library.

OPAC, COMPUTERISED DATABASE & ONLINE ACCESS
Library is using Bar-Code Technology at the circulation desk for check-in and check-out transactions. The library card catalogue has been replaced with a computerized Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC). The computer catalogue (OPAC) is extremely user-friendly and enables searches to be conducted with ease and speed.

The library has automated all the library operations and the library database is accessible to all the users within the library & across the Campus-wide Local Area Network (LAN). The library database can be accessed through telnet by outside users within and outside India. Library has created a Web-page to make the database available over the Internet. Library has e-mail and Internet facilities. It is an active member of the INFLIBNET program of UGC.

WORKING HOURS
Library is open throughout the year except a few national holidays. It functions from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on all working days and 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sundays and other holidays. During semester examinations, it is kept open till 12:00 midnight for four weeks.

HOSTEL, MEDICAL & SPORTS FACILITIES



HOSTEL FACILITY
A limited hostel accommodation is available to the students. 22.5% of the total number of seats are reserved for candidates belonging to SC/ST. Students coming from far off places are given preference for hostel accommodation.

MEDICAL FACILITIES
The Health Center, managed by a team of doctors, supported by nurses and other para-medical staff, caters to the basic needs of the campus community. There is a scheme of Health Insurance to provide the health care, which is mandatory for all the students in the University. The insurance covers expenses towards in-patient treatment subject to a maximum of Rs. 5,000/-. Any expenses related to medical emergencies are to be borne by the parents/guardians of the student concerned.

THE SPORTS FACILITIES
The University campus is a center for games, sports, recreational activities and for all competitive programs. There is a multi-purpose play ground on the campus for games such as cricket, football, volleyball, ball-badminton, tennis, basketball and athletic events. Modern facilities for physical conditioning are available at the New Indoor Gymnasium along with facilities for Table-Tennis, Shuttle Badminton, Chess and Carroms. Both intra-mural and extra-mural competitions are planned in such a way that the students are able to participate regularly in games and sports activities throughout the year.

The University is a member of the Inter-University Sports Board of India and its teams participate in zonal and all India Inter-University tournaments regularly.
