Reality vs. Horror Movies: The REAL Fear Factor

Every once in a while I find myself scratching my head in awe at the notion that there are atrocities being committed in this world that make the splatter films I watch look like an episode of Teletubbies. Then again, maybe it's the head lice. Who knows?

As of this writing, March 19th 2003, the president of my country initiated the first act of war against a pissant little Arab dictator named Saddam Hussein. Immediately after the first shells reigned down on Baghdad I went outside and removed the American Flag from the façade of my house. When asked why I was doing this I replied, "I cannot in good conscience continue to wave a symbol of democracy when the leader of my nation blatantly defies the democratic authority of the United Nations Security Council; an authority he swore to abide by when he took the oath of office.

There have been numerous times when the United States has exorcized its veto power in accordance to charter within the halls of the UN. As such, the allied nations took it on the chin, acted like grown-ups and said, "Okay". But now George 'Dubya' finds himself backed into a corner. Despite the continued browbeating of the opposing veto powers, he deliberately flips them the bird and says, "Fuck you I'm going to bomb the shit out of them anyway!" This single act of impetuous stupidity will likely have far more damaging ramifications than I think our good Mister Bush or even his cabinet members are even willing to consider. He has critically wounded our standing within the UN and it wouldn't surprise me if the US had it's veto-power revoked. Now that may sound extreme to some of you, but you can't deny that this putting a permanent black eye on the sort of democracy that these soldiers in the field are allegedly fighting for. So one has to wonder; where does it go from here? If Bush is willing to defy the UN Security Council this time, what's to say that he won't do it again?

Now the body of this rant is not about whether or not we should officiate a one-on-one meeting between Saddam and Allah. This is about overstepping boundaries. Once again, the United States is being placed in a sphere of political influence in which it has no viable claim. Saddam may be a chicken-raping jackass, but he hasn't done jack-shit to the US. Sure he has chemical weapons. But he's been good enough to only use them on his own people. Not that I support chemical warfare, but the situation in Iraq should have never grown in scope beyond the capabilities of the United Nations. That's what they're fucking there for! If the UN decides to continue weapons inspections, who the fuck is Dubya to say otherwise? We've been doing weapons inspections in Baghdad for the past twelve years and everything seemed to be going fine. If Saddam DID have these so-called weapons of mass destruction, he was at least playing the safe hand by not exposing them. And that's what it really boils down to. There's a difference between harboring weapons of mass destruction and utilizing weapons of mass destruction. In the twelve years since the end of the Persian Gulf War, Saddam Hussein has not so much as fired off a SCUD missile at the US. But thanks to Georgy Porgy, Saddam now has a legitimate reason to use them against American soldiers. If American soldiers return home with chemical defects, or worse in body bags, who is to shoulder the blame? Saddam? Hell, he's just protecting his ass at this point. When we start seeing news reports of army personnel melting into pillars of gelatinous paste by way of chemical warfare and the American public begins to scream "Why", I don't think we will have to look any further than
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

If widespread destruction and mayhem is what I have to look forward to on CNN for the next several weeks, then I would prefer to just throw my light-hearted heavily sanitized child-safe copy of
Hellraiser into the DVD player and be done with it.

So endeth the rant
