A contest was sponsored by Fox TV in several of their market areas. People were asked to write an essay about an individual who they feel is an everyday hero. Here are a few of the winning Everyday Heros who were in attendance to celebrate the season 7 premiere of 24.
Barbiedoll(on right)and her sister who nominated her as an everyday hero. Michigan winner.
The Essay:
I would like to nominate my younger sister as my hero. She celebrated her birthday this January. She is the glue that keeps our family together. She is always the peace keeper, and the calm logical one in times or great turmoil. In January of 2006 our mother was diagnosed with a cancer in her chest. My sister and I sat in the waiting area until the surgery was over. Three days later, my sister received the news that she had bladder cancer. As devastated as she was, she continued to go to the hospital to see our Mom. It broke all of our hearts that she could not share her pain and seek comfort from our Mom. She was a trouper. She stayed strong and positive through her chemotherapy visits. Sometimes she looked as if she just was not going to make it, but she pushed on.
Last month she received a scare from her doctor that the cancer might have returned. We have all been praying for and with her. She will have to begin a limited form of therapy this month. Since this trip would take place right around her birthday, it would be wonderful if we could surprise her with this fabulous gift to lift her spirits as she so often does for others.
One great thing about my sister is that she has always sought ways to give back, make a difference and fight for the underdog, even when she herself is often an underdog. She has raised money for different causes long before she ever found out about her mother or her own cancer. Since her diagnosis and treatment she has continued her efforts to make a difference in the lives of others. A true humanitarian is Barbiedoll. I am proud to call her my sister.
