Passages : Nehemiah 6.1-16 + 1 Peter 4.7-11 + St. Matt 25.14-30

"Well done, good and faithful servant ...... enter into the joy of the Lord." (Matthew 25.21). Here are the elements of a great life, the fruits of Harvest for the honest worker.

Magnificient! Brilliant! Great! Wonderful! Splendid ! Heroic ! - such words of praise thrill us to the core of our hearts and our faces glow with joy. A great life harvests all these and people praise us to the sky but Jesus Christ does not do so. He simply says, "Well done, good, and faithful " and we enter into His joy. I repeat, His joy first, before it becomes ours in much greater measures.

Well done: If a thing is worth doing it must be well done, not medium or rare. You look attentively at the responsibility given, not at the clock nor at the master nor even at the rewards. We are on "His Majesty Service" and we seek to put in good and faithful performance. The Parable of the Talents emphasizes the master giving more work and heavier reponsibility to his servants. He does not offer them a perpetual pension or reward them with a holiday trip the Disneyland in L.A. but greater responsibilities. He simply says: "Well done, good and faithful servant .....enter into the joy of the master."

Good servant: - (quality) Goodness is a fundamental and essential element of Christian character. Man was created "very good" and destined "to be good" and "to do good" all his life. Goodness existing in man is of God. It is a household word. "Be good !" we say often. The example of our Lord is: " He went about doing good....".

Faithful servant: - (fidelity) What is it to be faithful ? It is to be full of faith. It is fidelity. It is being trustworthy as well as trustful. It is being so loyal to duty, so devoted to one's job, so steadfast to principle and truth that no quick success can tempt me to fall below the required standard. I think everyone on "His Majesty Service" should sign off as "Your faithful servant" and mean every word of it.

The result of being "good and faithful" is: "Well done ! ....enter into the joy of the Lord."

The reward is related directly to the "quality" and "fidelity" of service. Like all God's excellent gifts, it is abundant - "a few things - many things". For brass He gives gold; for iron He gives silver. We give 10 percent. He gives 90 percent. God asks so little. He gives so much.

May God bless you abundantly !
