This research is dedicated to the memory of Madgie Bleaker Grant Inman. An obedient wife, loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother who touched the lives of many with her love, and kindness.
James Rainwater first married Laura Turner and after her death, he married Annie Jane Bennett. Annie Jane was the widow of George Smith who was killed in the Civil War. This research contains descendants of all four. There are half brothers and sisters on both side of the James Rainwater and Annie Jane Bennett union as-well-as step bothers and sisters across James Rainwater and Laura Turner union and the union of Annie Jane Bennett and George Smith. These families lived in a three county area; Richmond County in North Carolina and Chesterfield County and Marlboro County in South Carolina. The following chart is provided in hopes of making this family record easier to follow.

It is believed that Joshua Rainwater (wife is unknown) was the father of James Rainwater and seven siblings. However, information has not been found to prove this relationship.
James siblings are believed to be: Simon Peter (20 May 1813), Stephen (ca. 1817), Unknown daughter (ca. 1815 to 1820 possibly Elizabeth), Unknown daughter (ca. 1820 to 1825 possibly Harriet), Unknown son (ca. 1826 to 1830), Unknown daughter (ca. 1826 to 1830 possibly Nancy), Joshua (ca 1831).

James Rainwater and Annie Jane Bennett After James' first wife died, he married Annie Jane Bennett Smith who was the widow of George Smith. George had died in the Civil War. Annie Jane was the oldest of seven (7) children born to John Bennett (ca. 1801) in North Carolina and Rebecca Welch or Pearce also born in North Carolina. The confusion over Rebecca's maiden name comes from two of her children's death certificates -- Caroline and James Jefferson. Annie Jane's siblings are: Sarah (ca. 1840), Martha (ca. 1842), Caroline (16 Jan 1844), Elizabeth (ca. 1845), James Jefferson (3 Dec 1846), and Thomas Fletcher (12 Oct 1848).
