Tailchaser's Song, by Tad Williams.
Synopsis:
Fritti Tailchaser, a ginger tomcat of rare courage and curiosity, embarks
on a quest to rescue his cat friend, Hushpad--a quest that takes him to
cat hell and beyond.
A Review (from Civet Moon):
Nre'fa-o Cu'nre (hello friends). If you love cats or, just a good adventure
story, this is the book for you! "Tailchaser's Song" captures the very
essence of a cat and puts it in words. The way the languages are spoken
is an amazing detail. Everything happens for a reason, and it's never to
take up space! When Fritti Tailchaser visited cat hell I felt so bad for
the cats. I could almost smell the stench of death on every page, while
reading that part. I could feel the premonition that Tailchaser felt, the
os (wrongness) of the situation, and the evil creatures. It is amazing
how Williams works up a legend and weaves it into this "song" of a young
tomcat. This book was incredible, had I been sitting down while reading
it I would have been on the edge of my seat. [...]
My Opinion:
Well, I wish I could use the word as well as Civet Moon, but it would
be useless, because I just loved the book in the same way, and would suggest
it to every cat lover. Don't miss it!
Cat Stories, by James Herriot.
Synopsis:
The grand old British veterinarian and raconteur has compiled, in this book, a collection
of his favorite cat tales: the life of Yorkshire's cats from the point of view of
a great animal lover. Herriot is now retired after 50-plus years of practicing veterinary medicine,
primarily with farm animals. While, especially before WW II, country vets rarely treated house pets,
Herriot was an exception. Over the years, he not only treated a wide range of feline ailments
but met and befriended many colorful and devoted cat owners--and these stories
are as much about them as about the animals.
My review:
Everyone who appreciates Herriot's touching style, and the magic atmosphere of his novels, would
surely love this collection of wonderful cat stories. You'll love sweet little Emily, Oscar, Alfred
and all the others. And, of course, you'll give your heart to Olly and Ginny!
All Creatures Great and Small, by James Herriot.
Synopsis:
When newly-qualified vet James Herriot arrives in the small Yorkshire village of Darrowby,
he has no idea what to expect. How will he get on with his new boss? The local farmers?
And what will the animals think? James Herriot's first volume of memoirs contains hilarious tales
of the unpredictable Siegfried Farnon, his charming student brother Tristan, animal mayhem galore,
and Herriot's first encounters with a beautiful girl named Helen.
My review:
If you don't know Herriot yet, this can be a good start. It's one of his first books and will
introduce you to his wonderful world. Although this isn't a book only about cats, you'll appreciate
Herriot's style and his love for all animals (including humans!). I'm sure you'll look for all
his books after this one...
