FIDDLIN' SAMMY GIBERSON
Fiddlin' Sammy Giberson was born September 16, 1808 in Burlington County. One evening at a New Greta inn, Sammy bragged that he was the best fiddle player and dancer around. He went as far to say, "I could even beat the devil in a showdown." While walking home in the woods, Sammy encountered a stranger. The stranger said to Sammy, "I hear you can beat me fiddling and dancing." The devil and Sammy competed with each other until dawn. The contest was a draw. The devil was so impressed with the talents of Sammy that he told him to meet him again the following evening. The next meeting between Sammy and the devil, Satan taught Sammy how to play haunting music never before heard by any mortal. Everyone agreed that Sammy had become the best fiddle player in the world. For the rest of his life, Sammy would often disappear into the woods. People often heard the haunting music of two fiddles coming from the woods. This music became known as the "Devil Duets". After Sammy's death, the fiddle was locked away in a black box. People swore that they heard music coming from the box. Then, one day the fiddle disappeared from the box. Many years after Sammy's death, people claimed they heard the haunting sounds of two fiddles playing beautiful music in the woods. It is believed that Sammy is buried deep in the pine barrens in a little cemetery near Little Egg Harbor Township.
