My Soon to be Alma Mater

Appalachian State University!!

Appalachian State University is found in the mountains of North Carolina, about 30 minutes from the Tennessee boarder, about 1.5 hours from Charlotte, North Carolina (by way of I-421 to I-77), an hour from Virginia and just under 3.5 hours from Raleigh, North Carolina (by way of I-421 to I-40). I could give you exact directions, but that would take an awful long time. In short, we're in Boone, North Carolina.

Appalachian started as a teaching college a way long time ago before I was even born. Why they wanted to put it up here in the mountains where there can be entire months without sun and four feet of snow easily overnight is beyond me, but I'm glad they put it here to make it the school it is today. Someday, Appalachian has big dreams of becoming a 1-A school (whatever that means), however there are some of us, including myself, who know that Appalachian was never meant to be such a big school and wouldn't have come here if it was one. We like the scenery, the atmosphere, and the personal feeling you get from having a 1-8 teacher to student ratio (at least, it was that when I got here five years ago). All the pictures on this page are courtesy of Appalachian's home page, so you can tell, we're really proud of our school and the scenery around us. As you see, this is a gorgeous school in a very gorgeous area!

These are the residence halls when seen at night from across the duck pond that we're so lucky to have. This is a really interesting picture indeed, because, well, if I'm thinking right, this shot would now be obstructed by Trivette dining building. Still, it's not a bad picture. The buildings you can see on the other side of the lake are Eggers and Winkler. If you look really hard, you can see the windows of Bowie to the far left through the trees. My entire time here has been spent living in these three dorms. Nope, there was no apartment for this lady. It was really interesting going from a dorm like Eggers to Bowie. First off, Eggers was a female only dorm in 1995 when I first came here, and Bowie's co-ed. Well, now, they're both co-ed, but at the time, it was a shock. Sure, the floors in Bowie were single-sex only, but it's the thought. The other thing that was a shock was the fact that during my stay in Bowie, I think I had a roommate for all of 2 months, at the most. Those were the days!

Now, I live in Winkler. That was another shock. You can see how nice Winkler looks in that picture to your right. Winkler's about as tall as they get. We're ten stories of fun right here. The rooms are set up in suites of eight people (single sex only, no cohabitation!) with two bathrooms, four bedrooms, a kitchen and a living room sort've area. This has been a real treat. I'm going to thoroughly miss the time I've spent here.

Well, to learn more about Appalachian State University, check out their homepage (including a real nifty virtual tour) by clicking the picture of the sign that says Appalachian on the top of my page. Or, you can go back and check out the rest of my homepage by clicking the picture of the sunset.
