Houston/Harris County Basset Rescue
What Happens After a Basset is "Rescued"

Well, that is a good question. Basically it depends on the dog and its situation, but it goes something like this.

First the dog is evaluated. Any immediate dangers are addressed first. If the dog has a life-threatening problem, or may compromise the safety of the rescue volunteers, it is placed in under the care of the veterinarian right away.

If the dog is not an immediate threat to its self, or those around him/her, it is first brought to the rescue facility. First it is bathed and groomed. The toe nails are clipped and ears cleaned. A topical flea/tick medication is applied and the dog is started on a regular diet.

The dog will be then examined by the veterinarian and a treatment plan developed depending on the results of the exam. Experience has shown that we can expect ear and eye infections as well as heartworms, intestinal worms and other infections. All conditions will be treated until they are cured, unless of course there is no cure. In cases that have no cure the dog is returned to the rescue program to live out the rest of its life as comfortably as possible. We put a dog to sleep only under the most severe medical conditions !!

In addition all vaccinations will be brought current and a new collar, leash and tags will be issued. The dog will also be spayed or neutered and in many cases a micro chip will be inserted under the dogs skin so he/she can be more easily identified if they ever get lost again.

Once healthy, happy and well nourished the dog is available for adoption. Check out the Dogs Available for Adoption section to see a list of Bassets that are ready to find a new home.

The entire adoption fee goes to the Veterinarian that provides the medical care. The food, collars, leashes and others expenses are provided and paid for by our volunteers and our corporate sponsors. For a list of our supporters check out theFriends and Supporters page. Believe me, the adoption fee covers only a fraction of the actual cost. Thank God for the volunteers!!

Well, that's the process, except for the actual adoption. That is where we need the most help.
