Charles W. Smith (My Father) Staff Sgt. Charles W. (Bill) Smith, 59, of 181 Barton Street., Lock Haven, was pronounced dead at 11:31 a.m. Wednesday, June 22, 1988 in Mary Washington Hospital, Fredericksburg, Va. He was stricken in his barracks while at summer camp at Fort A.P. Hill with the 728th Maintenance Battalion of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. An autopsy is being performed. Born in Beech Creek on Feb. 20, 1929, he was the son of the late Charles H. and Annie Kessinger Smith. He had been employed by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation since 1971. Before that, he worked for 19 years at Hammermill Paper Co. Staff Sgt. Smith served in the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1949, then served with the 728th Maintenance Battalion at Lockport for 22 years He and his wife, the former Lydia M. Burd, married June 1, 1949. Surviving along with his wife, are three sons, Charles E. Smith of Castanea, Danial L. Smith at home and Steve Smith at home; a daughter, Cheryl Smith of Ashley, Pa., and four grandsons. Also surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Paul (Dorothy) Pletcher of Blanchard, Pheobe L. Smith. of Lock Haven and Mrs. Glen (Libby) McCloskey of Howard and two brothers, Clayton H. Smith of Cocoa Beach, Fla. and Paul E. Smith of Beech Creek. Capt. Rodney Miller of the 728th Maintenance Battalion, Pennsylvania Army National Guards, will officiate. Interment will be in Dunnstown Cemetery with full military rites at graveside by 728th Maintenance Battalion.



Edward S. Burd (My Grand Father on my mothers side), 75, of 755 Sturdevant St., Flemington, PA., died Sunday at 3 p.m. in the Lock Haven Hospital, where he was admitted at 5:20 a.m. after suffering a heart attack at home. Born in Lock Haven on Sept. 1,1905, he was the son of Charles and Bertha Snyder Burd. He retired in 1976 after 43 years with Hammermill Paper Co. Mr. Burd was a member of St. Luke's United Church of Christ, Lock Haven. Surviving are his wife, the former Madelyn Hoover; two daughters, Patricia Pittman, Castanea, and Mrs. Charles (Lydia) Smith, Lock Haven; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Eleanor Markley, Flemington, and Edna Mckinley, Beech Creek.

Madelyn H. Burd (My Grand Mother on my mothers side), 75, of 755 Sturdevant St., Fleminton Pa., died Sunday, Dec. 15,1985 at 12:15 a.m. in the Lock Haven Hospital. Born in Lock Haven on Oct. 10, 1910 she was the daughter of William and Sadie Fitzgerald Hoover. Mrs. Burd had worked at Montgomery Wards and Woolworth's in Lock Haven. She was a member of St. Luke's United Church of Christ in Lock Haven. Her husband, Edward S. Burd, died Oct. 23, 1981. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Kenneth P. (Patricia) Pittman of Castanea and Mrs. Charles W (Lydia) Smith of Lock Haven; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three brothers, Melvin Hoover of Youngdale, Ardell Jeirles of Selinsgrove and Charles Jeirles of Williamsport and five sisters, Beatrice Wood and Martha Willits of Williamsport, Edith Peter of Detroit, Mich., Ella Strickland of Jacksonville, Fla. and Gloria Wertz of Renovo, Pa.


Patricia A. Pittman (My Aunt) Patricia Pittman, 59, nurse in area. DANVILLE - Patricia A. (Burd) Pittman, 59 of Sturdevant St. Flemington, died Wednesday, Oct. 12, 1994, at 10:40 a.m. at the Geisinger Medical Center, following and extended illness. Born in Lock Haven April 20, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Edward S. and Madelyn Hoover Burd. She worked as a private duty nurse for many years in the Clinton County area. She is survived by a daughter, Mary Dick of Rote; a son Kenneth Pittman of Flemington; a sister, Lydia Smith of Lock Haven, 2 grandsons; and several nieces and nephews. The Rev. Russel Looker will officiate. Burial will be in Dunnstown Cemetery.
