To Those I Love and Those Who Love Me

When I am gone, release me, let me go...
I have so many things to see and do.
You mustn't tie yourself to me with tears,
Be happy that we had so many years.
I gave you my love. You can only guess
How much you gave to me in happiness.
I thank you for the love you each have shown,
But, now it's time I traveled on alone.

So, grieve a while for me if grieve you must
Then let your grief be comforted by trust.
It's only for a while that we must part,
So bless the memories within your heart.
I won't be far away, for life goes on
So, if you need me, call and I will come.
Though you can't see or touch me, I'll be near,
And if you listen with your heart, you'll hear
All of my love around you soft and clear.
And then, when you must come this way alone,
I'll greet you with a smile, and
"Welcome Home."
Love You All...always.

Juanita Valentine was a former student of mine. I taught her 7th grade earth science in my first year of teaching at Coldwater High School. I can honestly say that she was the best student in my class: she always strove for academic excellence and was a pleasant person to be around. She was well-liked by her classmates and well-loved by her family and close friends.

In her 8th grade year, it was discovered that Juanita had a brain tumor. Even with the great pain she suffered -- which she never let on to having -- and the continuous rounds of treatment she endured, she came to school as much as possible and did her usual best in her classes with a brave and beautiful smile.

Juanita passed away on February 8, 1997. She left the above poem for her family, friends, and teachers. She is greatly missed by all.

So far as I know, Juanita's account is still open and unpaid at St. Jude's Children's Hospital in Memphis, TN. If you are willing and able, contributions can be made in her name and mailed to St. Jude's.

If you choose to distribute or post this poem, I would like to know. Thank you.
