According to Doris Higgins, "It is thought that Francis Higgins, who lived some time in the 18th century, came from near Cloone in County Leitrim. There are a large number of the name in Cloone."

Also according to Doris Higgins, "Niall of the Nine Hostages, 126th King of Ireland (circa 350 AD -- 400 AD) was the greatest of the Irish kings. He was killed in battle in the Alps leading his forces against Rome. He had eight sons:

Dithri, who succeded him;

Laoghaire, who was king when St. Patrick arrived;

Niall, who settled in Tyrone and Derry, and from whom the O'Neills are descended;

Connall, who settled in Donegal and from whom the O'Donnells are descended;

Murragh, who settled in Wicklow and from whom the Murphy family are descended;

Brian, who settled in Clare and from whom the O'Brians are descended;

Maille, who settled in Galway, and from whom the O'Malleys are descended;

Taich, whose son was Uigin, the first Higgins. Uigin's son was O'h-Uigin, the "h" being inserted between the two vowels in order to make pronunciation easier. In course of time this became changed to O'Higgins, and ultimately (in some cases) into Higgins to make it similar to the English surname Higgins, which means the descendant of a Viking. Uigin settled in Leitrim and Sligo where his descendants have lived ever since. He was hereditary Chief Bard of Ireland which title was held by the family up to the English conquest. As the Sligo/Leitrim area was where Naill's grandson originally interited and settled down, and as the name has been consistently indiginous there ever since, and in no other part of Ireland, it is very probable that all of that name from Sligo/Leitrim are descendants of Niall's grandson, but this of course is only surmise. The portion of this traditional history [which follows] from 400 AD to 1650 AD is probably more or less correct. The reason of the break in 1650 is that from 1690 to 1830 it was illegal for a Catholic to hold property, or to have a tombstone over his grave, or to have his birth, death, or marriage recorded [in Ireland].

According to a genealogy written out by Doris Higgins, in Ireland, in the early 1970's, this Ellen Higgins, who married Felix McGarty, was born the daughter of Peter Higgins and his wife, Ellen Higgins, nee Higgins. This Ellen, the mother, was the daughter of Theodore Higgins, and his wife, Ellen Higgins, also nee Higgins, and was married twice, first to Peter Higgins, and then to a second man named Higgins. None of this has been confirmed.

Statewide Financial Corp., Jersey City, has promoted Augustine F. Jehle to senior vice president of its Statewide Savings Bank.

He is responsible for human resources, risk management, and the sale of nontraditional bank products. His new responsibilities include commercial business development.

Mr. Jehle, who joined the bank in 1989, remains administrative vice president and corporate secretary with the holding company.

He began his career in 1965 at Chemical Bank in the corporate lending division, and transferred to its international division in 1973. Mr. Jehle became executive vice president, director, and chief executive of Bank of Liberia, Chemical's West African affiliate, and in 1977 was appointed general manager of Chemical's Nassau, Bahamas office.
