Subject: New Searchable Database Announced!

It is with great pleasure that I announce the availability
of a new SEARCHABLE DATABASE on our Jewishgen Website!
It is the "American Jewish Year Book Obituary Index: An
Index to over 3,000 obituaries of prominent Jews, 1948-1994".
This is an in-house compilation, by the publishers, taken
from Volumes 51-96 of the AJYB. Jewishgen has been granted
permission to enter this information in a searchable database
on our Website!

The American Jewish Year Book is an all too often overlooked
resource. Over a year ago, at the instigation of Bernard Kouchel,
three Librarian members of Jewishgen, led by Rosanne Leeson, began
the process of searching important national databases, such as
OCLC and RLIN, in order to provide a state-by-state listing of
all institutions claiming to have complete runs (from 1899)
of the AJYB, to be added as an Infofile. What was discovered
was that so many institutions across the U.S., as well as some
in Canada, had holdings that it was an impossibly lengthy task.

The decision then was just to add an Infofile describing the
background of this periodical, and giving some hints as to what
type of information could be found within its covers. Following an
inquiry to the publishers, to confirm some points, we were told
of this Index. Further e-mail correspondence resulted in their
permission to allow us to enter it into our database. So, for
the first time ever this data will be available outside of the the
Offices of the AJYB! We are very grateful for this gift!
