Employee Files

In the state of Iowa all workers have the right to see their
personnel file and may have a copy. The employer can only
charge $5 for the copies. This provision is covered by
Iowa Code Chapter 91B. There is a court case which provides
that this does NOT apply to former employees.

Under federal law (OSHA) you have the right to have
a copy of your medical file. Your local OSHA office
can help enforce this law.

When you receive your file make an inventory of each document
found in the file such as "a one-page application dated
February 2, 1998". Send the inventory to the employer and
advise that the documents listed are all that were included in
your file and if the employer has other documents those documents
should be provided within seven days.
