TRÜMPY, TRUMPY, angestammtes, verbreitetes,
reformiertes Häuptergeschlecht in Glarus, Ennenda, Mitlödi, Schwanden

TRÜMPY, TRUMPY, TRIMPI, a native, widely spread,
reformed [Protestant] clan in Glarus, Ennenda, Mitlodi, Schwanden, and
Filzbach, in part responsible for the industrial development of the 18th
and 19th centuries.
The name is derived from either the old, horseshoe-shaped musical instrument of the same name which is reflected in the heraldic shield ("Annals of the Historical Meeting Nov. 21-23, 1915 at Engelberg," p. 103) or from a surname which is still in existence today as appellate in Basel and Graubunden. [The trump, or Jew's harp, is an ancient musical instrument. It is still known by this name in Scotland and Ireland which suggests that the name may have Celtic origins. (M.L.T.)] The original seat of the clan is most likely Ennenda - Ennetbuhls [two connected towns directly across the river from Glarus]. |
Heini T. of the KH. Glarus is killed in the Battle of Nafels
in 1388. In 1434 Fridli T. gains burgher status in Zurich.
There the clan - most likely independently of the Glarus branch - is already documented since 1345 through guild master Peter T. |
Sihl eroberte Stadtbanner
In 1444 Rudolf T., Zurich resident of Glarus descent, is captured
and executed in an attempt to recapture the city flag of Zurich which had
been taken in battle at St. Jakob at Sihl in 1443.
In 1526 the property of "the trimpig [sic] boys" in Ennenda is devastated by flooding of the river Linth (Bäldi Chronicle); Fridli T., town counselor, owns Alp Frohnalp in 1545. |
Hans T. we meet in 1538 as share holder of the Guppen mine.
Several Trümpy are listed in 1560 as donors to the hospital in Glarus. Other T.'s of Schwanden are named as members of the local guard in 1582. |
Baschli Trümpy von Glarus und Jakob Trümpy von Schwanden
leisten 1566 Urfehde (Urfehde Sammlung 194, 197),
Baschli T. of Glarus and Jakob T. of Schwanden declare a clan feud
in 1566 (Uf. 194, 197).
Johannes T. [our earliest traceable ancestor] of Ennetbuhls, officiating as county administrator in Werdenberg in 1599, buys the tagwenrecht rights in Glarus in 1588, followed in 1610 by Rudolf T., county head in Werdenberg in 1637, who had already held this office since 1620 in place of his brother Salomon, who had been elected in 1619 but died the following year. |
Adam T. of Ennenda acquires ownership of the tagwenrecht in Filzbach
during the first half of the 17th century.
Some of his sons start the Filzbach branch which becomes extinct in 1834 with the exception of a further, still flourishing branch in Holland. |
At the beginning of the 18th century descendants of Rudolf T., born
in Ennetbuhls and citizen of Glarus, become citizens of Niederurnen and
in 1773 descendants of parson and chronicler Christoph T. become burghers
of Schwanden.
Toward the end of the 19th century a branch of the T.'s of Ennenda buys property in Mitlodi, in 1910 one family settles in Glarus. |
| The Schwanden line can be traced back to Heinrich T., who
became county militia officer in 1606, county head in Sargans in 1615, in Lugano in 1622, in Uznach in 1628 and is made county landammann in 1636. |
| His male descendants died out in 1766; Johann Jacob T. (1724 -1792), on the other hand, founded a familyy line in Bergen and Oslo, Norway, which is still in existence and which branched out during the 19th century to Livorno and Genoa (Italy), New York and Sudamerica. |
