I didn't know about her until I was 13 and she wasn't allowed to research who her birth family was until she turned 18. The lies ultimately destroyed my family. I rea ly truly commend you for open adoption ... I think it's the only way to go! Of course, I'm a little jaded and prejudiced from my own experience, but I don't see how honesty could hurt a kid any worse than trying to keep "the family secret".
