Mensa has a number of Special Interest Groups, or SIGs. The Homeschooling SIG has recently been reorganized and is now entirely online. The SIG newsletter is no longer active. The e-group I think makes up for it. If you would like to start up the newsletter agian please e-mail me and I'll get you the info. Reviews on new books about gifted childern and adults.
My name is Kyria. I am now one of the "go to" people on this site. I work for myself now and homeschool my now 11yr old boy. We have been homeschooling near five years after leaving P.S. I have always homeschooled just not knowing it had a name. We had a very hard time in P.S. They knew he was gifted they just didn't want to deal with it.
I am giving him the education he needs. The P.S. were forcing him to fit in some predesigned mold. That was mean, but I do feel it was a lesson he needed to guide him to his future. I also needed it to help me find and help other parents who have run into the same brick wall.
I plan to add some of my best links and Tips I've learned from my home tests and from what others have passed on to me. Links to the lastest Homeschoolers in the news (good and bad). I'd like to have a page about all the styles of homeschooling. My changes may be slow, but they will happen.
Thanks for come to the site and good luck.
Becky is watching from the sidelines now. Please say a little pray for family and send her positive energy.
I feel her info is important. She shows another look into a family with gifted children.
Hi, my name is Becky, and I've been homeschooling since 1998. I have three
children, son #1 born in 1993, son #2 born in 1995, and daughter born in
1997. I frankly never gave homeschooling much thought until my oldest son
began reading at age 3! I found myself a complete jumble of parental pride
and abject terror. What would I do with such a child?? What would the
school do with such a child?? By kindergarten, he was reading beginning
chapter books, and our fate was sealed. I knew that he would be bored to
tears in school, and quickly lose interest. Even if they did advance him a
bit, they couldn't advance him enough without placing him with significantly
older students, for which he was not emotionally ready.
So, in September of 1998, we took the plunge and began to homeschool. We
have our ups and downs, and I find myself constantly challenged to keep up
with not only him, but his equally gifted brother and sister. I've been a
Mensan since the mid-80's, and immediately joined the existing homeschool
SIG. However, the SIG was in danger of dying, so with a little bit of
trepidation, I volunteered. The newsletter was re-launched as an
e-newsletter in April 2001, and the SIG continues to grow.
