Customizing Model Horses

Definitions in terms of the model horse hobby:

acrylic paint - a type of paint that dries rapidly

acrylic rod - usually clear, these are used to support models whose positions do not allow them to stand on their own (ex. a jumping model)

armature - the material used inside an original sculpture to give it a basic shape.

custom - any model horse that is no longer in its original factory condition. Original sculptures and resin casts are also regarded as customs.

Dremel - the company that manufactures the Dremel Moto-tools used by most artists. These tools can be used to sand and carve models.

epoxy - the material artists use to create sculpted details. It is usually "hand-workable".

heat gun - an extremely hot "hair dryer". It is used to heat parts of the model to reposition them. These are sold at most hardware stores (Value, ACE, etc.).

mohair - the most common type of hair used to hair models

oil paint - a type of paint that dries slowly and thus allows time to sufficiently blend colors.

ramie - a fine hair that is used on Stablemates or white horses (since mohair does not come in pure white).

RRH - a model that has been repainted, remade, and haired. See the photo of Painted Quest on the right or of Diamond Sweet Desire at the top of this page.

Repaint Only - a model that has been prepped and repainted, but not remade or haired (see photo of Flaming Embers on the left).

resin - the material from which many artists cast their original sculptures from to sell copies of it to other hobbyists

scratch technique - etching; a way to create more realistic looking models by making small cuts in a natural horse hair pattern
