Here's the happy ending story of Simon, formerly known as Duke:

Dear T.L.C. Staff,

I recently adopted a yellow, year and a half old lab from you. I want to thank you for bringing him into my life. I started talking about getting a dog and thought it would be nice to save a life since I really didn't have time to dedicate to housebreaking a puppy. When I first came to the shelter, I met Duke who now answers to the name Simon. We noticed that his right paw was bent outwards, so I even had more sympathy for him. But I had made a promise to my mother that I would not just adopt the first dog that I saw and would consider others. Reluctantly, I put Simon back in his cage, gave him one last look, and we left to visit another shelter. At the Will County Humane Shelter, we saw several other interesting dogs and puppies, but my heart was still with Simon. Fearing that by the time I got back to the shelter Simon would be taken by someone else, I made a call to Dennis and asked him to tell Simon that I would be coming for him.
We took the time only to stop at PetSmart for some welcome home gifts for Simon including a new collar and leash. I'll never forget how happy he was to get into our car with us. Back home he was greeted by our family dog, Lily and our six cats. Lily and Simon got along fabulously although the cats were a little intimidated.
The first time I took Simon outside to play, we threw a ball for him and he ran for it but never turned around. I feared that he was gone forever since he hadn't caught on to his name just quite yet. So my brother helped me to catch him and bring him back. I knew then that I just couldn't bring him home and expect him to be part of the family. He needed to be trained and I needed to take the time to do it. So I enrolled him in a private obedience class and learned that I had alot to learn. We worked hard but Simon is intelligent and caught on quickly. I'm happy to say that Simon is obedient now and when we go out to play we both have a great time and I never worry that he'll run away, not only because he's trained but because we love each other. Thank you, T.L.C., for giving me the chance to find a good friend. Simon continues to relish every moment I spend with him and every gift that I give to him and his love is all I need from him.

Thank you, again.
