Got A Dog? Check Your Insurance
This is not a column about good breed bad breed so no rebuttals please! I have had a few German Shepherds in my day, and have a Rottie now, and a dog I truly admire is a good friends' pit bull, one of the most intelligent well behaved dogs I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. But we also have to face facts. As much as we love our canine buddies, one third of the claims made to homeowners insurance policies are dog-bite incidents. You don't really know your insurance company, until a bite occurs, so you might want to check/ recheck your policy now, and save yourself a major headache later.
This information has been taken from Money Magazine March 1999: "lnsurers are increasingly canceling or refusing to issue homeowners insurance for people who own dogs who have a tendency to bite." "There is no industry wide blacklist of breeds, but pit bulls, rottweilers, and German Shepherds top the list of breeds most likely to bite" (sorry Rin Tin Tin).
"Statistics compiled show 20% of fatal dog attacks are by Pit Bulls, the next most likely to bite are Rottweilers, and insurers also fear German Shepherds." "Metropolitan Life is pickier: It won't insure owners of Huskies, Chow Chow or Doberman Pinchers either." " Allstate automatically turns away only Pit Bull owners but - along with Travelers, Prudential, and State Farm, which don't discriminate against particular breeds - also ask about any dog's biting history, whether to write or continue a policy." "Not all bites are equally black marks." "lf, for example, your dog bit a child who was touching her new puppies, you probably will not lose your insurance."(Unless the bite is severe) Having your pet spayed or neutered and taking it to obedience school might put you in a more favorable light with your insurance company, if you have a dog that has bitten.
Hopefully you will never have to worry about a dog bite, but check your coverage anyway just to be sure.

NATIONAL AFFINITY CARDS UPDATE
Those of you who are helping TLC with your credit card purchases through the ACTION FOR ANIMALS MASTER CARD or the MORRIS CREDlT CARD we really appreciate it. But due to a computer glitch, we are not sure TLC has been credited for all purchases. To make sure that TLC is receiving credit, please check your statement, and the code number for TLC is #159. If you do not see that number on your statement, please call 1-888-261-4680 and have them update your account to insure proper credit goes to the shelter. Thank you for checking. Remember that for every purchase you make with the Action For Animals Card or your Morris Card a donation to TLC will be made without costing you a penny. So go ahead, charge those things you enjoy and don't feel guilty because you will be doing a good deed at the same time!

We wish to thank Mrs. Adelman for writing this lovely poem especially for T.L.C.. Many of you in the area probably remember all the wonderful poems Mrs. Adelman wrote for the Shopper Publications for years.
Happy 25th Birthday TLC
We thank you TLC for twenty five years,
Of sheltering animals, for overcoming their fears,
Of the injured, the abused, and frightened ones brought
For giving them the healing and the comfort they sought.
Through the years thousands came to your door,
You helped them all, and did so much more.
Many wouldn't have made it, if you weren't there,
With concern and tender loving care.
Your hard work, dedication and loyalty,
Made you a landmark in the community.
Families came to you when they wanted a pet,
And you gave them memories, they will never forget.
We send thanks and good wishes for your April 1st birthday,
And we pray God keeps sending His blessings your way.
by Hazel Adelman
