Shelter News from Shorty the Cat's Point of View (the cat about town)

Geeks, Glitches and Conniption Fits

Hi!
I had heard about conniption fits before although I had never seen one, I do know conniption fits are just something people get. Now there have been some tense times at the shelter, when things go wrong, but I had never seen anything like this .... a full blown conniption fit. You guys were lucky that you were not there to witness it.
"Shorty, is a conniption fit life threatening?"
I would have to say it is not to the person having one, but it could be to those around the person having the conniption fit, if they should say the wrong thing.
"Who had the conniption fit?"
I am not at liberty to say.
"Shorty, can you tell us what brought the conniption fit on?"
It started right after a certain someone who writes the newsletter, typed in all the names of the volunteers that worked the craft show, and the names of those that who donated items for it, then a computer glitch and all the names were lost.
"Didn't she have everyones' name written down somewhere?"
Yes they were written down, but the paper that had all the names written down had fallen on the floor and one of the puppies chewed it up.
"Uhoh!"
That is exactly what I said. Anxiously she tried to retrieve the information but her efforts were futile.
"Shorty, is this when she had the conniption fit?"
No Tiny, she was still ok, although she was becoming agitated. Since no one else was able to help, she frantically called the Geek Squad. I heard a sigh of relief when she finally got to talk to a real person after listening to scads of automated messages. She spilled out her tale of woe, only to be told there was nothing they could do for her, since she had not hit save prior to the computer plug being pulled when a little dog decided to go back behind the desk.
"Did she have a conniption fit then?"
No, actually it didn't happen until Dennis Sr. said something to her, then a full blown conniption fit ensued, it was not a pretty sight.
"Then how are people going to know what happened at the craft show?"
That was her main concern that people would be angry because they were not acknowledged for helping donating items.
I told her, don't worry our friends will under stand, you can't help it that you're only human and those things happen ..... (not infallible like me). I said I can remember the majority of people, that is until I was banished for surveying the bakery table too much, so I didn't get a chance to see everyone. Anyone I accidentally omitted please let me know and I can put it in the next newsletter.

"Shorty, you think of everything."
Why do you think I am the Shelter spokescat? Purrrrrr purrrr purrrrr
Anyway we would like to thank the following people that worked hard setting up the craft show and also those that worked so hard the day of the sale: Annie Coleman, Sandi O'Brien, Amy and Mary Ann Lukas, Mercedes Kane, Linda Sowder, Michele Chalifoux, Bob Rossi, Corey Carter, Joanie Futterer, Collette Walker, Dennis Carter Jr., Leslee Ala, Nina and Debbie Pellici, Val Kot, George Mikota, Connie Bylsma, Michelle and Sal Maratto, and Donna and Wayne Holous, Gerry and Stan Pajkos, Kathy Przybyla, Judy Kunkel, Phyliss Klingensmith, Clare Paskiet and Charles Kopeika.
We also want to thank all the before mentioned folks for things they baked and/or made for the sale, and all the following people: Kathy Reinhart, Linda Muhr, Darlen Koloday, Kate and Jeff Eagen, Mable Chapman, Lee Ann Mayr, Dorothy Noval, Marian Village, Kathy Kanak, Florence Smith, Irene Szcesniak, Millie Tesar, Barbara Griffen, Betty Zarembe, Donna Kargol, Gail Elisiak, Lawrence and Joan Reylek, Maebell Howell, Jim and Bev Roseth, Patti Robinson, Mrs. Mike Martin, Lila Konow, Kathryn Ashe, Elaine Tryjefczka, Rosemary Webster, Paula Bickel, Tina Jones, Linda Nylen, Nancy Vales, Charlotte Wright, Tracy Jaramillo, Marilyn and Maureen Hagedron, Chris Pieczonka, Susan DeSanto, John Small, Beth Manion, Erika Follkie, Alison Andrew's Day Spa, Jakes House of Kibble, Chew on This Dog Barkery, and Pam Brown who also raised a few hundred dollars with her own bake sale where her husband works! Any omissions I apologize, and contact us so we can remedy the situation.

"SHORTY! It's the bowling alley on the phone for you, and they don't sound happy. Something about the puppies filled the finger holes in all the bowling balls with gummy bears! What were you thinking?"
That was not my doing. The puppies wanted to help and they thought the bowling balls were human kongs that you hide treats in! Sorry to run like this but it always takes me to straighten things out.

Love,

Shorty

PS Get your tickets now so you don't miss out on the Cosmic Bowl, February 11th. It's always a sell out! If you'll be looking for me, I'll be taste testing at the buffet.

"Shorty!"
Ooops! I meant to say I'll be checking people in at the buffet. See you there!

Help Wanted: People Interested in Doing Animal Transports

We are looking for individuals that:

1. Love animals:
As you would be transporting anywhere from five to ten animals per trip. We would supply the crates

2. Have the time:
A round trip transport generally will take 5 hours out of your day.

3. A reliable vehicle:
We certainly wouldnít want anyone to break down with a vehicle filled with animals.

4. Can bring a family member or friend. This is not mandatory but it certainly wouldn't hurt, since some people get sleepy driving that many hours, so having someone with could be advantageous.

What's in it for you?

1. The pay is zero.
you would be donating your time and the use of your vehicle. There is one little perk though, you can deduct your gas and mileage.

2. A great feeling
The animals you will be transporting come from rural shelters where adoptions are extremely low. You will be enabling these animals to get a 2nd chance, something they wouldn't have if we didn't help.

Interested? Give us a call at 708-301-1594

Hello: You Have Just Reached the TLC Animal Shelter...

Hello: You have reached 708-301-1594, Tender Loving Care Animal Shelter. Due to the high volume of calls we have been receiving, please listen closely to the following options and choose the one that best describes you or your situation.

Press 1: If you have a 10 year old dog and your 15 year old son has suddenly become allergic and you need to find the dog a new home right away.

Press 2: If you are moving today and need to immediately place your 150 pound, 8 year old dog.

Press 3: If your cat is in heat and her caterwauling is keeping you awake, and you need to get rid of her because you need your rest.

Press 4: If you have just gotten a brand new puppy and your old dog is having problems adjusting so you want to get rid of the old one right away.

Press 5: If your little puppy has grown up and is no longer small and cute and you want to trade it in for a new model

Press 6: If you want us to come to your home today and pick up the dog or cat you don't want.

Press 7: If you have been feeding and caring for a 'stray' for the last three years, are moving and suddenly determine it's not your dog.

Press 8: If your dog or cat is sick and needs a vet but you need the money for your vacation.

Press 9: If your relative has died who has left you a lot of money and you don't want to care for their elderly dog or cat because it does not fit into your lifestyle.

Press 10: To leave an anonymous garbled message, letting us know that you have left a dog or cat in our yard in the middle of January, which is in fact, better than just leaving an animal without leaving a message.

Press 11: If you are going to get angry because we are not going to take your pet that you have had for fifteen years, because it is not our responsibility.

Press 12: If you are going to threaten to take your 14 year old dog or cat to be euthanized because we won't take it in.

Press 13: If you have a dog that has a slight aggression issues, i.e. has only bitten a few people, and in each instance required stitches

Press 14: If you want us to use the space that would go to a stray to board your personal pet for free while you go on vacation

Press 15: If it is Christmas Eve or Easter morning to deliver an eight week old kitten or puppy to your house before 6:30 am, before your kids wake up.

Press 16: If you have a female dog or cat that had 10 litters, but we can't spay her because she is pregnant and it is against your religion

Press 17: If your 2 year old cat or dog is marking all over the house but you haven't gotten around to having him neutered.

Press 18: If you need a puppy or kitten immediately and cannot wait because today is your child's birthday

Press 19: If you want a pedigree dog or cat and you think you should get him for free

When you call TLC you will not be speaking to an automated answering system, you will get a REAL PERSON on the other end of the line! We have actually heard each and every one of these scenarios that you were probably chuckling at, and at times we have had to bite our tongues to keep from blurting out how we really feel. @#$%@$@% @^#%! It is no wonder we always keep an aspirin bottle sitting alongside the phone. So if you ever stop in and see one of us seemingly walking around in a daze babbling to ourselves, then you will know that it has just been one of those days.

TLC's 2nd Plant and Garden Fundraiser

When: Saturday May 20th

Time: 9:00 am until 1:00 pm

Where: Homer Township Hall located 1/4 block south of Route 7 (159th Street in Homer Glen)

Here's a chance to beautify your garden while helping the animals at TLC. There will be a variety of plants for you to choose from along with garden decorations.

If you would like to contribute something for the event, we would love to have your extra perennials, ground cover or what have you. If you are a crafter any garden decorations would be welcomed! Or if you are good at putting together container gardens, or hanging baskets, these would make great gifts for any occasion.

Thank You "Anonymous" for the portable light up bill board sign!

We want to thank a donor who wishes to remain anonymous for the portable light up display sign he purchased for the shelter. We are very excited about having the sign since we will be able to advertise TLC's upcoming events. That little traveled gravel road that used to be out in front of the shelter years ago (forgive me but just remembering back to time when TLC first built on 151st and can't believe all the changes that have taken place. Back then we didn't even have a stop light on 151st and Bell). Now 151st is a busy thoroughfare with so much vehicle traffic to area stores and subdivisions, that we thought this a perfect way of advertising and reaching more people.

Looking for Sponsors for this years walkathon

We are looking for businesses that would be willing to sponsor this years walkathon. Sponsorship helps defray some of the expense the shelter incurs holding the event, and for those businesses sponsoring it gets the company name out to the public. Sponsorship also shows you support the TLC Animal Shelter and want to help us make a successful event to raise money for homeless animals that are at TLC.

I know June 3rd seems quite a way off, but in order to get your companies name included on the back of the walkathon shirts, and to get your companies name listed in our newsletter which will probably be going to print the 1st of April, we need to know ASAP. Please give us a call at 708-301-1594 if you are interested.
