OXFORDS OF THE WORLD

OXFORD: The English surname OXFORD is English in origin, being derived from the place where the original bearer once dwelled or held land. In this case the surname indicates "one from Oxford", the ancient and beautiful university city on the Thames. The hyponym in fact derives from the Old English "oxen-ford", meaning, naturally, an "ox-ford", a river crossing for oxen and cattle. The surname seems to have been especially numberous in medieval York. (Hanks & Hodges, Page 210) The English city of Oxford is the inspiration behind the towns of Oxford in: Alabama,Arkansas,California,Colorado,Connecticut,Florida,Georgia,Idaho, Indiana,Iowa,Kansas,Kentucky,Louisiana,Maine,Maryland,Massachusetts, Michigan,Mississippi,Missouri,Nebraska,Nevada,New Jersey, New York, North Carolina,Ohio,Pennsylvania,Texas,Virginia,West Virginia,Wisconsin, in America.

One who came from Oxford (where the oxen cross the ford), in Oxfordshire.

A guide to the OXFORD FAMILIES OF AMERICA and RELATED DECENDANTS. My primary goal is to bring the OXFORD Families of America together through genealogy and reunions! Genealogy is more than just a hobby to me. I believe it is important for each generation to document it's roots for the following generations. Each year that passes makes the trails grow colder and more difficult to follow. Please join us in preserving the past for future generations. Come back and visit often.
