Archibald was born in Glasgow and came to Canada as a young man of 20 in 1843. Catherine (Katy) married Archibald (Archie) of Holland Township, Williamsford, in 1851. Katy and Archie lived on Lot 13 Con. 1 until they migrated to Morden Manitoba in 1876. To Katy and Archie were born eleven sons and two daughters; William, Jeanett, John, Archibald, Alexander (Sandy), Thomas, James, George, Frederick, Donald, Gray, Logan and Agnes. In 1875, the eldest son, Bill, went west with his cousin, Robert Gunn Mc Kay and his wife. In 1876, the Buchanan family travelled from Owen Sound by lake boat to Duluth, by rail to Fisher Crossing (Crookston, Minnesota), then by stern wheeler river boat to West Lynn (Emerson) and up the Red River to Winnipeg. Here the family purchased oxen, a Red River cart and a covered wagon to travel to their new home. Winter 1876 came early and found the family with only walls and rafters to their cabin completed when the first blizzard struck. The family was living in a tent. That tent became the roof for their cabin that winter. In 1976, the descendants of Archie and Katy gathered and erected in their memory, a cairn, on the homestead at Morden.
Special thanks to cousin Carol for
this story and much more information on our family.

This family came over from Scotland. I have found three
sons so far and I'm still looking to see if there were any daughters. The
boys are spaced quite far apart so it makes one suspicous.
