SHORTLY ABOUT LEOS

WHO WE ARE?

Members of a club which is part of the world wide charity organization called Lions Clubs International, but it works independently. Leo can be each young person between 14 and 30 who wish to make useful work for the society in a part of his or her spare time. Our club is independent of any religion and political ideology. We are keen on to make the friendship among people of the world stronger through our international relations.

WHAT LEO MEANS?

The word LEO is composed of the first letters of the following words:
Leadership, Experiences, Opportunity.
LEADERSHIP is a basic requirement for our members. (The fact that you want to do something for the community in an organized way.)

EXPERIENCES will be our benefit about a better knowledge of life and people through our activities and the organization.

OPPORTUNITY to reveal our abilities, to know better each other and to make a better world.

Above all of these, the Leo Clubs are communities where everybody can feel all right during the programmes.

HOW IT BEGAN?

The first club was founded in the USA in 1957, Pennsylvania. Although we had to wait seven years for the second club, it was followed by a sudden boom. In the year 1967 for example there was more than 200 club founded world wide.
Nowadays there are more than 112,000 Leos in more than 115 countries and there are 30-40 clubs founded monthly. Like our club, several other Leo clubs have homepages in the world.

THE FIRST IN HUNGARY

The Budapest Leo CLub was founded in September 1990. With works they help basically the children. They deal regularly with physically disabled pupils, they organized several times Christmas carols in kindergartens and children's hospitals. They led a fund raising for the Autisme Foundation and gave home to the IInd East Eauropean Leo Workshop in 1995 in Ráckeve.

ABOUT THE SOPIANAE LEO CLUB

Our club in Pécs was Hungary's 5th. We were founded on 22 January 1994 and our Installation Night (=Charter Night) was on 10 May 1994. Our aims are like those of the Budapest Leo Club, we would emphasize the personal contact with the needy, and that means less financial aid, however we organized parties which made the youth move and the benefit of those soirees went always to predefined purposes like the aid of the Antidrug Centre of Keszü. We are also organizing traditionally Christmas carols for needy children and young people. In 1995 we were helping two families in Sub-Carpathia, in Ukraine.

Actually, we have established a cooperation with the Megye street Children's Home of Pécs, we are helping children in their studies and we make common free time activities.

We fit regularly our activities in with those of our founder, the Pécs-Normandia Lions Club. We are proud that among the organization of National Leo Meetings we had the honour to held the IIIrd East European Leo Workshop here, in Pécs during the spring of 1996. In 2001, we successfully established exchange with Slovenian Leos.

We would always act in accord with the slogan of the Lions Clubs International, which is: "We Serve."
