The BATES Branch
This is George W. Bates, my greatgrandfather on my mother's side. He was born in Lee County IA, 21 Nov 1851. His father, Nicholas Bates was born, Nov 1826, in Bavaria Germany. He was married to Matilda Harris. After her death, Nicholas moved to Portland, OR, and lived with son, George, til his death 02 Jun 1902.
Looking at the 1860 census (Lee County, IA) I found Nicholas & Matilda (along with children) They had his last name as Botts. I am not sure if the census taker misunderstood or the name really was Botts. Further research hasn't turned up anything.

Dorothy Isolene Martin 14 Jul 1896 to 09 Jul 1979
Bruce was the third son of George & Lizzie (Menzies) Bates. He and Dorothy were married about 1916. They had two children, Dorothy June 26 Jun 1917 and Bruce Adler Jr. 13 Nov 1920.
