My New York Trip

April 29- May 2, 1999

(Were you really expecting to hear a different tune?)

My flight arrived at 6:15 am (my body thought it was 3:15 am!). I met Susan at the coffee shop near her sister's apartment in Manhattan on Columbus and W72nd. Her sister's place is about 1/2 block from Central Park and a couple of doors up from where John Lennon was shot (no, she wasn't home). After settling in, we hit the streets running!

Our first stop was the stand by line for a taping of "The View" - a talk show hosted by Barbara Walters, Meridith Viera, Star Jones and Joy Beher. We were told that there was no stand by seating for that day.

But persistance paid off and we got in at the last minute (into VIP seating no less!) The day's guests were Ted Danson and one of the Revlon Models that was involved with the NYC Run for Women's Cancer. These shots are what happens during the commercial breaks.

Some of the guys from "All My Children" must have heard that we were in town, because they popped in just to see us! Or was it that Revlon model???

We received a book about the most important women of the century with the forward written by Barbara Walters. I was able to get her to autograph my copy before security wisked her off stage. It was really fun to be there!

We had to do some shopping of course, so we hit Macy's, Sak's 5th Avenue and Bloomingdales, not to mention countless other shops along 5th Ave.

We had a lite lunch at the Trump Tower, then headed back to the apartment to get ready for an evening showing of "Annie Get Your Gun" with Bernadette Peters and Tom Wopat.

Saturday morning, we took the subway down to the World Trade Center and walked to and took the Staten Island Ferry, where we saw some great views of Manhattan skyline and waved to the Statue of Liberty

We walked around the Wall Street area, where we took the bull by the horns! Now if only our stocks would do the same!

Saturday afternoon we took in a matinee of a Gershwin review called "Fascinating Rhythms" After a bit more shopping, we found out that we were able to get standby tickets to "Beauty and the Beast" - 4th row, center stage!

What an incredible production! The sets were amazing and the performers were great - especially Patrick Page who played Lumiere. Andrea McArdle (the original "Annie") played Belle.

Nothing like a late night dinner after the show. We ate at Sardi's and enjoyed people watching along with our coffee and dessert.

On Sunday, we took the subway to Greenwich Village for brunch and enjoyed the sites, then took a cab over to the Empire state building, then took a relaxing ride through Central Park.

Thanks Anne for letting us use your apartment! It was great!
