Well, there are some basic reasons for owning a Pit Bull. They are low maintenance. They have short coats that only need brushing a few times a week. They are medium-sized (females should be between 30-50 lbs.; males 40-60lbs.) They do not bark much. The mere sight of them makes them a good guard dog. They adapt well to different climates. They have a high pain threshold which enables them to be tolerant of young children, provided they have been socialized around children. They are very bright(which can also be interpreted as stubborn :>). They are all-around good family dogs.

Who is the Ideal Pit Bull Owner?

The ideal Pit Bull owner is a learned Pit Bull owner. He or she understands some of the potential drawbacks of the breed such as the hysteria associated with ownership, the Pit Bull's potentially dominant nature, and the Pit Bull's overwhelming strength. The ideal Pit Bull owner is able to turn the negatives into positives. He or she is active and is willing to give a Pit daily execise, such as a long walk, a romp in the park or a swim in the pool. An ideal Pit Bull owner stimulates his or her Pit Bull by enrolling the dog in obedience, agility and/or Schutzhund classes. Most of all, the ideal Pit Bull helps the tarnished image of the Pit Bull gleam a bit more brightly by showing to society the wonderful potential inside each American Pit Bull Terrier.

My Reasons for Getting an American Pit Bull Terrier

To make a long story short, when Matt and I moved out of our respective homes, we decided we wanted to get a dog. We visited a couple of local pounds in search of the one quality we were both looking for in a dog--affection. We had grown up with great dogs, they just weren't the type of dogs that gave a lot of kisses and snuggled in bed with you. We knew, above all, that was what we wanted. There was only one type of dog we met at the pounds which fit the bill for us. Yup, it was a Pit Bull. This was the sweetest dog, all kisses for Matt. I stood off to the side, waiting for this dog to "lock on" and rip his face off. Of course, it never did. After that, I was curious to see exactly what the Pit Bull was all about. I got several books on dogs and Pits in general and I liked what I saw. We decided that the Pit was the dog for us, and I wouldn't be surprised if we stick with Pits the rest of our lives.
