In this place, on Sunday last, after a brief illness of several days, Dr. J. B. MASSER, aged 56 years, 1 month and 24 days.  When the death of Dr. J. B. Masser was announced on Sunday evening last, many a moistened eye and trickling tear indicated the sincerity of grief that was felt by those who knew him best.  A successful practice of thirty-four years in a community that had unbounded conrfidence in his skill and judgment as a physician, had gained him many friends among all classes, and for them it was not difficult to drop a tear and blot out the frailties of our nature in one who had so long and so generously ministered to them, rich and poor alike, in sickness and affliction.  The deceased had suffered for many years, from a disease of the bowels, which finally terminated his life.  On Friday he was out visiting some patients.  During the night he had a severe attack of hemorrhage of the bowels, but was better next day, and on Sunday morning he got out of bed, but another severe attack at eight o'clock, left him entirely unconscious for 20 minutes, from which he rallied and was able to speak, and give some directions, but gradually sunk until 5:15 in the evening, when he quietly passed away into the life to come.  He leaves a faithful and devoted wife, always true to her trust, a daughter, and two sons just growing into manhood.

John Snyder, of Selinsgrove.  He was promoted to a Captainer and after the war, was elected and served as Colonel of the State Militia for a number of years.  He was Justice of the Peace for upwards of twenty years.  He also served as County Treasurer, and Associate Judge for several terms.  He was an exemplary citizen and a devoted member of the Evangelical church, and a leading spirit of its religious exxercises for more than a quarter of a century.  He was an honored member of the Masonic Order and was always foremost in all matters that were beneficial to his fellowmen.  His remains were interred on Wednesday of last week, in the Sunbury cemetery, according to the rites of the church and the Masonic Order.  They were followed to their last resting place by a large concourse of friends and relatives.

SCHRONTZ - In Sunbury, on Sunday, September 25, 1881, at the residence of Mr. Elias Brocious, Mrs. Mary Schrontz, aged 88 years, 9 months and 25 days.  Mrs. Schrontz was the oldest and one of the most faithful members of the Lutheran church in Sunbury.  She was confirmed in Trinity Lutheran church, Lancaster city, Pa, by Rev. H. G. Muhlenberg, on Good Friday, 1808.  She was married by the same pastor in the year 1815, and soon after moved to Sunbury.  Here she lived and died, beloved by the members of her own and other churches, and by all who knew her.  She was the mother of eight children, fifty-two grand children, and forty-five great grandchildren.  To this little army of descendants she has left a truly Christian example, well worthy of their daily imitaiton.  Among her last encouraging words to her pastor were these:  " I love Jesus and I will soon be with HIm.  I will trust in the Lord till I die.  The Lord is my Shepherd, He will take care of me, Jesus will be to me all I need in my weakness."  Sometimes she would repeat encouraging passages of scripture, and parts of good old German hymns that she committed to memory when she was catechised by Father Muhlenberg, with whom she now enjoys the Saints' everlasting rest in Heaven.  The funeral services were held in the church, and were largely attended.  Text, Isa. 46: 4  "And even to your old age I am He; and even to hoar hairs will I cary[sic] you; I have made and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you."  As the mother's voyage of nearly ninety years has ended, and she has reached the bright shore beyond, let none of her loved ones wish her back again of the sea of life where the living have to contend with so many storms of affliction and waves of sorrow.  Let them be still and know that God has done this, and say with Christian submission:  "Gentle mother, thou has fled, where no grief can entrance find; Lull'd to rest the aching head; Sooth'd the anguish of the mind.  Every tear is wiped away, Sighs no more shall heave the breast; Night is lost in endless day, Sorrow in eternal rest!" --  Geo. Parson

William Sampsel, aged 20 years, son of John Sampsel of Hanover street, Northumberland, was instantly killed in the east end of DY yard in this city at 11:55 o'clock, Saturday night.  The unfortunate young man had been in the employ of the Pennsylvania railroad compnay for only 21 days and was working in the yard on a daylight job.  Saturday evening and of the night yard workers laid off, and Mr. Sampsel was working in his place when the accident happened.  Just how the accident occurred in not known, but one of the members of the crew saw him fall from the car.  The train was stopped at once but the unfortunate young man had fallen between the cars in such a manner that his feet were across the rails and were completely cut off, and his head was crushed.  Death must have been instantaneous.  He was brought to the depot by his crew and turned over to Undertaker Weimer, who took the remains to his undertaking parlor on Fourth street and prepared them for burial.  The body was taken to the home of his parents at Northumberland on Monday morning, from which place the funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon  Mr. Sampsel's mother is a sufferer from heart disease, and the shock cause by the death of her son has placed her in a precarious conditon.
