THE CIBILICH FAMILY - ABOUT US

Hello. Dobro Dosli. Kia Ora. Welcome to THE CIBILICH FAMILY - ABOUT US page. Here is a brief overview of the CIBILICH FAMILY ORIGINS and a list of related surnames.

The modern day Cibilich family originates from the fishing village of DUBA NEAR TRPANJ on the PELJESAC PENINSULA in Croatia . Duba is nestled on the nothern side of the Peljesac Peninsula at the foot of MOUNT SVETI ILIJA about eighty or so kilometres northwest of Dubrovnik. The old part of Duba is concealed by a valley and reveals its true beauty at the end of the winding road from Trpanj.

It is believed that our forebears migrated to the Peljesac Peninsula from GRUDA IN HERCEGOVINA some time in the late fourteenth or early fifteenth century. Two branches of the family became established in OSKORUSNO and in DUBA some time before 1500. Please visit the CIBILICH FAMILY PRE DUBA for a more detailed analysis of this early history.

The oldest main family names associated with the village Duba near Trpanj are CIBILICH , PETROVICH , TOMASOVICH , MURINA , JURISICH , BILICH , SLABICH and ZEGURA . The three English spelling versions of our name are CIBILICH , CIBILIC and ZIBILICH.

In the last 150 years there has been a massive migration of the population out of Duba. The old waterfront in Duba has withstood the ravages of time and has witnessed many of the Duba people leaving and promising to return. Very few have returned permanently. The permanent population of Duba is now probably less than fifty.

Fortunately the village Duba near Trpanj has proved to be a popular holiday destination and during the summer months the population increases dramatically. Many of these holiday makers are Duba people who return to the village of their forebears each summer to enjoy the sea and the sunshine. Sunbathing on the beach at this time are many of those whose grandparents were born there.

By far the majority of Cibilich / Cibilic / Zibilich migrants have left Duba for the USA particularly for LOUISIANA in and around NEW ORLEANS . The Cibilich name can be found in many other countries including Australia and New Zealand. In NEW ZEALAND the Cibilich / Cibilic families represent three main lines of descent.

My father TOME ( TOM ) CIBILICH emmigrated to New Zealand in 1937 to join his father VISKO CIBILIC who had first come here in 1924. My grandmother MARIJA CIBILIC had remained in Duba. My father's brother VLAHO ( WALLY ) D. CIBILIC arrived here in 1939. Both my father and uncle married and settled here in Auckland. My grandfather VISKO CIBILIC finally returned to Duba in 1959. My father's sister ANE BILIC still lives in Duba.

Some of the family names connected to the CIBILICH FAMILY TREE are as follows below. This list is by no means complete and is courtesy of the late VLAHO ( WALLY ) D. CIBILIC. I have detailed genealogy of my Cibilich ancestors and the other Duba families going back about fifteen generations.
