MARY CLEMENTS FRANKLIN

Mary Clements Franklin of San Antonio, died April 27, 1999. Mary was born in Goldthwaite on January 1, 1919. She was the daughter of Duke and Tillie Clements and sister to Bentley and Kathleen Clements, all deceased. Goldthwaite was home to Mary until her college years. She married Paul Dwight Franklin in 1954. He preceded her in death February 29, 1984. Mary is survived by her daughter, Tillie and grandson, Paul Duke. She was an artist and a craftsman. We will miss Mary for her wit, her knowledge and willingness to share her excitement in learning.


ELLA MAE JESKE LAID TO REST MAY 13 AT ZION CEMETERY

Ella mae Jeske of Priddy Texas died Monday, May 10, 1999 at Providence Hospital in Waco, Texas. She was 70 years of age. Mrs Jeske was born November 1, 1928 at Pottsville Texas the daughter of William and Eda (Nichter) Reinert. She married Carl Jeske, Jr. on September 25, 1947 at Pottsville, Texas. She was a Lutheran. She was a homemaker. Survivors are two daughters, Donna Abdou of Priddy and Tracey Jeske of Hewitt; one son, Carl William Jeske of Austin; her mother, Eda Reinert of Priddy; three grandchildren, Amen, Kate and Philip; two brothers, William Reinert of Midland and Wayne Reinert of Weatherford; and nine nieces and nephews. The funeral was Thursday, May 13, 1999 at 10:00 a. m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Priddy, Texas with Dr. Paul Senff officiating. Interment was in the Zion Cemetery, Priddy Mills County, Texas Pallbearers included Philip Abdou, Amen Abdou, Richard Jeske, J.C. Partin, Carl Janner, Lester Limmer, Dale Bufe, and Danny Partin.


FUNERAL CONDUCTED FRIDAY, MAY 21ST FOR BERTHA SMITH

Bertha Smith of Goldthwaite, Texas died Tuesday, May 18, 1999. at Scott and White Hospital, Temple Texas. She was 88 years of age. Mrs. Smith was born June 10, 1910 at Amarillo, Texas, the daughter of Arthur C. and Hattie Pearl (Good) Nichols. She married Millard Rountree in June, 1926. He preceded her in death and in 1962 she married Albert Smith. He preceded her in death in 1981. Mrs Smith was a Baptist. She was a member of the Eastern Star. She was a homemaker. Besides her husbands, Mrs Smith was also preceded in death by one son. Survivors are two son, Robert Rountree of Gorman and Buddy Rountree of Goldthwaite; five grandchildren; nine great grandchildren. one sister, Juanita Naomi Eubanks of Fort Worth; and one brother, Lee Roy Nichols of Amarillo. The funeral was Friday, May 21, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at the Stacy-Wilkins Funeral Chapel in Goldthwaite with Rev Doug Holtzclaw, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Goldthwaite officiating. Interment was in the Goldthwaite Memorial Cemetery, Goldthwaite, Mills County, Texas. Honorary pallbearers were Jamison Rountree, Shawn Rountree, Mika Rountree, Rosemarie Bradley and Jillian Bradley. Pallbearers were Douglas Rountree, Ray Dean Roundtree, Ryan Rountree, Brady Rountree, Cory Rountree and Jim Bradley.

Elizabeth DeMoss Standley of Goldthwaite, Texas, died Friday, May 28, 1999 at her home in Goldthwaite, Texas. She was 77 years of age. Mrs. Standley was born September 25, 1921 in Nashville, Tennessee, the daughter of Tom and Elizabeth (McFarland) DeMoss. She married Ray Standley in October 1942 in the state of Idaho. The couple moved to Goldthwaite from Midland Texas in December 1950. She was a Methodist. Survivors are her husband, Ray Standley of Goldthwaite; three sons, Dick Standley of Dallas, Tommy Standley of Seattle Washington and Bobby Standley of Norfolk, Birginia; two daughters, Mary Carman of Birmingham Alabama and Evelyn Gholson of Tempe, Arizona; and four grandchildren, Brian, Lisa, Tyler,and Claire. The funeral was Monday, May 31, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Goldthwaite with Dr. Tom Loftin, pastor of the church officiating. Interment was in the Goldthwaite Memorial Cemetery, Goldthwaite, Mills County, Texas. Serving as pallbearers were James Leonhard, James Boykin, Bernie Hobson, Tyler Carman, T.J. Blackburn, and Brian Standley.


FINAL RITES FOR BUD WILLIAMS HELD MAY 22ND AT EDINBURG

E. Lee "Bud" Williams of McAllen, Texas, age 79, died Wednesday, May 19, 1999 at Columbia Rio Grande Regional Hospital, McAllen, Texas. Mr. Williams was a former manager for Lloyd Benson Sr. for 35 years. He was a World War II veteran, who fought in The Battle of the Bulge. During his military service he served under General Patton and was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart medals. Bud Williams moved to Edinburg, Texas from Goldthwaite in 1948. Survivors are his wife, Inez Williams of McAllen; three sons, Spencer "Pete" Williams and his wife, Vicki of Edinburg, John Ray Williams and his wife, Cheri of McAllen, and Richard Williams of Washington, D.C.; two sisters Catherine Turner of Amarillo and Minnie Rogers of Austin; three brothers, A.C. Williams of Goldthwaite, Henry Williams of Sudan and Cecil Williams of Shreveport, LA and two grandsons, Randy Williams of McAllen and Justin Williams of McAllen. The funeral was Saturday, May 22, 1999 at the Presbyterian Church in Edinburg with Tim Ousley, minister of the Mission Church of Christ, officiating. Burial was at Taylor Street Memorial Cemetery, McAllen, TX.


WITTY BABY LAID TO REST

MaKayla Marqueen Witty, infant born to Rebecca Marqueen Witty and Michael Bates, was born and died the same day, Friday, May 28, 1999 at Brownwood Regional Medical Center, Brownwood, Texas. Graveside rites were conducted Monday, May 31, 1999 at 4:00 p.m. at the Hurst Ranch Cemetery, Star,Texas. Besides her parents, she is also survived by her maternal grandparents, Richard and Audrey Witty of Star; her maternal great grandparents, Norris Witty of Star and Marqueen Forbes of Goldthwaite; her aunt, Rachel Witty of Star; and her God parents, Kimberly Moore and James Stephens, both of Star.


RUTH GEESLIN FINAL RITES HELD HERE MARCH 8, 1997

Frances Ruth Geeslin of Goldthwaite died Thursday, March 6, 1997 at Hillview Manor Nursing Home in Goldthwaite. She was 78 years of age. Mrs. Geeslin was born May 8, 1918 at Indian Gap, Texas, the daughter of Lester A. and Pearl (Spivey) Harris. On January 2, 1937 she married Virgil Ryan Geeslin at Hamilton, Texas. She had lived in the Mills County area all of her life. She was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church at Mount Olive. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Geeslin was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Virgil in August of 1990, and two brothers, J. B. Harris and John D. Harris. Survivors are one son and daughter-in-law, Lester and Jo Ann Geeslin of Goldthwaite and sons-in-law, Virgilene and Bernie Farmer of Bedford, and Linda and Jerry Rountree of Goldthwaite; six grandchildren, Andrea Esse, Leslie Joe Geeslin, Brady Rountree, Ryan Rountree, Stephanie Kulhanek, and Andrew Farmer; and two great grandchildren, Daniel and Madison Kulhanek. The funeral was March 8, 1997 at 10:oo a.m. at the Stacy-Wilkins Funeral Home Chapel in Goldthwaite. Bro Vance Rodgers of Lockhart officiated at the final rites. Interment was in the Goldthwaite Memorial Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Andy Farmer, Brady Rountree, Ryan Rountree, Scott Esse, Randy Holland, and Mike McMahan. Daniel Kulhanek served as honorary pallbearer. Stacy Wilkins Funeral Home, Goldthwaite, was in charge of arrangements.


MARY R. BRALEY LAID TO REST AT MULLIN, TX

Mary Ruth Braly, of Goldthwaite, Texas died Thursday, June 3, 1999 at Brownwood Regional Medical Center, Brownwood, Texas. She wa 74 years of age. Mrs Braly was born January 20, 1925 at Mullin, Texas, the daughter of Frank Akin Cobb and Lillian (Davis) Cobb. She was a Methodist. She was a rate clerk for Eagle Trucking. She was preceded in death by one brother, Frank Cobb; one sister, Margaret Williams; her husband, Claibe Dickson; and baby, Belinda Kay. Survivors are one son, Caleb Thomas Dickson of San Leon, Texas, one sister, Nell Gambrell of Houston; and one brother, J.D. Cobb of Maypearl, Texas. The funeral was Saturday June 5, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at the Stacy-Wilkins Funeral Home Chapel in Goldthwaite. Wayne Lewis officiated at the final rites. Interment was in the Oakview Cemetery at Mullin, Texas. Pallbearers were Randy Cobb, J. Cobb, William Gambrell, Paul Mitteleteclt, Jim J. Willes, Rex Williams Jr.


LOUIS LYNDELL KARNES, 66 PASSES AWAY ON THURS. JUNE 3

Mr. Louis Lyndell "Fuzzy" Karnes, age 66, died Thursday, June 3, 1999 at a Gatesville hospital. The memorial service will take place at a later date. Mr. Karnes was born in Star, Texas on July 4, 1932 to the late Louie and Brownie Mason Karnes. He attended school at Eagle Pass, Texas and graduated in 1950. He retired from the United States Army where he served for 22 years. He received two Purple Hearts in the Vietnam Conflict. Mr. Karnes was preceded in death by three brothers, Carl Karnes, Ellsworth Karnes and Frank Karnes. Survivors are his brothers, Oscar Karnes of Eagle Pass and Jim Karnes of Waco; sisters, Letha Soules and Nelda Karnes, both of Gatesville, Corene Thomas of Snyder, and Bonnie Calaway of Hereford; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family requests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society.


FUNERAL CONDUCTED SATURDAY, MAY 29 FOR BIVIANA VALENZUELA

Biviana S. Valenzuela of Goldthwaite, Texas, died Wednesday, May 26, 1999 at Brownwood Regional Medical Center, Brownwood, Texas. She was 66 years of age. She was born December 2, 1932 in Pilares, Mexica to Julio Sanchez and Francisca (Vejar) Sanchez. She married Hugh Outlaw in 1959. He preceded her in death in 1982. She moved to Van Horn in 1957, then to Goldthwaite in 1979. She moved back to Van Horn and married Lucas Valenzuela and lived there until Lucas died. She has been living in Goldthwaite since 1990. She was a member of the Goldthwaite Evangelism Church and a homemaker. Besides her husbands, she was also preceded in death by a son, Billy Harvey Outlaw. Survivors are three sons, Bique Ramirez of San Antonio, Jesse F. Outlaw of Austin, and Bobby J. Outlaw of Goldthwaite; one daughter, Hazel Kincheloe of Star; 17 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and two step grandchildren. She is also survived by eleven brothers and sisters, Maria Franco, Juan Sanchez, Julia Muro, Gavina Payan, Faustina Flores, Ben Sanchez, Dolores Sanchez, Simon Sanchez, Lupe Sanchez Tarango, Ramon Sanchez and Polo Montoya. The funeral was Saturday May 29, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at the Van Horn Assembly of God Church. Officiating the service were David Mullins, Jimmy Sellers, and Norita Ayers. Burial was in the VAn Horn City Cemetery, Van Horn, Texas.


BUDDIE LEE SUTHERLAND FINAL RITES HELD HERE ON SATURDAY, JUNE 5TH

Buddie Lee Sutherland of Goldthwiate, Texas died Thursday, June 3, 1999 at his home in Goldthwaite. He was 75 years of age. Mr. Sutherland was born January 28, 1924 in Bandera County Texas, the son of William Fredric "Fred" and Sara Elizabeth "Lizzie" (Bessent) Sutherland. He married Wanda Ruth Crelia on April 29, 1952 at Waco, Texas. Mr Sutherland was a heavy equipment operator in Mills County for 20 years. He served in the United States Air Force. Survivors are his wife, Wanda Sutherland of Goldthwaie; two sons, and their wives, Danny and Leslie Sutherland of Goldthwaite, and Tim and Suzy Sutherland of Round Rock Texas; three daughters, and their husbands, Kathy and Andy Cook of Goldthwaite, Jan Sutherland of Magnolia, Texas, and Gayle and Rob Black of Pinehurst, Texas; 18 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and one niece, Marie Dixon of Goldthwaite. Graveside rites were conducted under the direction of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars at the Goldthwaite Memorial Cemetery in Goldthwaite, Texas on Saturday, June 5, 1999 at 10:00 a.m. Officiating with Jack Vaughan, minister of the Assembly of God Church in Goldthwaite. Serving as pallbearers were Carroll Bunting, Johnny Truitt, Jeff Stewart, Mark Lindsay, James Cook, Warren Harris, and Edwin Hardin.


ROLAND ROWAN DIES IN ONE CAR ROLL OVER

GOLDTHWAITE - Roland Ralph John Rowan, 22, of Star, graveside service at 10 a.m. in Hurst Ranch Cemetery; arrangements by Stacy-Wilkins Funeral Home. Roland Rowan was fatally injured early Sunday, May 5, 1996, in a one-car rollover in Brown County, the Department of Public Safety said. Roland Rowan, 22, died about 2:45 a.m. at Brownwood Regional Medical Center, about an hour after the accident near the intersection of Farm-to-Market roads 2126 and 45, officials said. A DPS communications operator said Rowan was traveling north on Farm-to-Market Road 45 at high speed and failed to negotiate a curve. His car left the roadway, rolling several times and ejecting him before it came to rest in the intersection. Rowan, who was traveling by himself, was not wearing a seat belt, authorities said.


RAYMOND SPINKS LAID TO REST IN MULLIN'S OAKVIEW CEMETERY

Raymond Spinks of Mullin, Texas died Sunday, June 13, 1999 at M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston, Texas. He was 71 years of age. Mr. Spinks wa born December 13, 1927 at Mullin, Texas the son of Martin Monroe and Alma (Calder) Spinks. On April 29, 1957 he married Theda Warren at Goldthwaite. He was a Baptist. He served in the U.S. Army from 1950 until 1952. He was a mechanic and worked in building maintenance. Survivors are his wife, Theda Spinks of Mullin, three daughters, Brenda Burrus, Laveta Spinks and Lana Spinks all of Mullin; one grandchild, Tyler Burrus of Mullin; one brother, Doug Spinks of Mullin; and three sisters, Jean Ferguson and Neva Warren, both of Mullin and Dalpha Routh of Ballinger. The funeral was Tuesday, June 15, 1999 at 10:00 a.m. at the Stacy-Wilkins Funeral Home Chapel in Goldthwaite. Rodney Thomas and Allen Oxford officiated at the final rites. Interment was in Oakview Cemetery, Mullin, Mills County, Texas. Serving as pallbearers were Max Booker, Bill Worden, Tom Grady, Eugene Davee, Jimmy Davee, and Bobby Leverett. Jude Miles was honorary pallbearer.

Violet Muse of Goldthwaite, Texas died Tuesday, June 8, 1999 at Hillview Manor Nursing Home in Goldthwaite. She was 83 years of age. She was born April 23, 1916 in Hamilton County, Texas, the daughter of Thomas B. and Addie (Kirkland) Fuqua. She married Aubrey Muse on April 17, 1937 at Hico, Texas. He preceded her in death on September 19, 1974. The couple had made their home in Goldthwaite since moving from California in 1961. Mrs. Muse was a homemaker. She was a member of the Baptist Church. Besides her husband she was also preceded in death by one daughter, Jeanette. Survivors are two sons, Robert D. Muse of Bellevue, Nebraska and James C. Muse of Goldthwaite; one daughter, Mary L. Geeslin of Goldthwaite; nine grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and one brother, Thomas Bart "Rabbit" Fuqua Jr. of Hamilton. Graveside rites were conducted Friday, June 11, 1999 at 10:00 a.m. at the Gentry's Mill Cemetery in Hamilton County, Texas. Butch Pesch, pastor of the Priddy Baptist Church, officiated at the final rites. Serving as pallbearers were Clifton E. Cromeams, Tim Sutherland, Douglas Muse, Brian Geeslin, Michael Geeslin and Samuel D. McCubbin.

Virginia Leighnae (Gena) Dellis of Arlington, Texas died Monday, June 7, 1999 at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. She was 21 years of age. Miss Dellis was born March 13, 1978 at Arlington, Texas, the daughter of Joe and Tempest (Ables) Dellis. She was a member of the Church of Christ. She was a bank teller. She was preceded in death by her father, Joe Dellis, her maternal gradparents, Buster and Fritz Ables, and her paternal grandfather, Roy Dellis. Survivors are her mother, Tempest Dellis of Arlington; one sister and her husband, Jo Lynn and Brian Crouse of Arlington; one niece, Sarah Elizabeth Crouse of Arlington; and her grandmother, Jessi Dellis of Goldthaite. The funeral was Friday, June 11, 1999 at 10:00 a.m. at the South Arlington Church of Christ. Interment was at 4:00 p.m. at the North Brown Cemetery in Mills County, Texas. Officiating at the rites were Minister Brad Graves and Minister Terry Jackson. Pallbearers were Code Ables, Quincy Ables, Mike Smith, Taylor Goerdel, Robert Glen Phillips and Ace Price.

BROWNWOOD — Ira Cummins, 84, of Blanket, died Wednesday March 24, 1999 in a local hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Blanket First Baptist Church with the Revs. Billy Camp and Gary Day officiating. Burial will be in Blanket Cemetery, directed by Davis-Morris Funeral Home of Brownwood. Mr. Cummins was born in Bell County and lived most of his life in Brown County. He married Jewell Welty Stanley in Blanket in 1957. He was a member of the Blanket Lions Club and the Blanket First Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife of Blanket; one son, Jerry Cummins of Arlington; two daughters, Linda King of Arlington and Barbara Davis of Okla.; three stepsons, Dale Stanley of Blanket, Billy Stanley of Odessa, and Chester Stanley of Houston; two stepdaughters, Betty Roundtree of Goldthwaite and Nettie Tatum of Conroe; nine great grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren.

Graveside rites were held at 3:00p.m. Friday, June 18, 1999 for Georgia Mae Jacobs at the Coahoma Cemetery with Russ Mullins, minister of the Coahoma Church of Christ, officiating. Mrs. Jacobs was 68 years of age. She died Wednesday, June 16, 1999, at her residence in Coahoma. She was born July 3, 1930 in Goldthwaite. On August 5, 1950 she married Guy Wayne Jacobs in Colorado City, Texas. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Coahoma Church of Christ. Survivors are her husband, Gus Jacobs of Coahoma; two daughters, Beverly Scribner of Grapevine, and Darlene Gressett of Coahoma; one son, Gus Wayne Jacobs, Jr. of Brownwood; five sisters, Jewel Casbeer of Goldthwaite, Olivia Taylor of Gatesville, Alta Casbeer of Abilene, Belma Harrell of Portland, and Ruby Trice of McKinney. FUNERAL HELD FOR ERA ELLEN ELLIS

Era Ellen Ellis, age 84, of Prairie Grove, Arkansas died Monday, June 21, 1999 at Hendricks Medical Center Hospital in Abilene, Texas. She was born July 22, 1914 at Mullin, Texas, the daughter of Everett Isaac and Mattie (Brookenbrough) Oxley. Mrs. Ellis belonged tothe First Presbyterian Church in Prairie Grove Arkansas. For the past two and one half years she has resided in Abilene. Survivors are one daughter, Peggy Jackson of Abilene; one son, Billy Don Ellis of Farmington, Arkansas; five grandchildren, Kelly Grissom of Breckenridge, Jett Robinson of Abileen, Stacy Robinson of Rockwell, Megan Ellis and Chad Ellis, both of Huntsville, Arkansas; one great grandchild, Kendra Grissom of Breckenridge. The funeral was conducted Thursday, June 24, 1999 at 1:30 p.m. at the Luginbuel Chapel in Priarie Grove, Arkansas with Dr. John King officiating. Interment was in the National Cemetery at Fayetteville, Arkansas.


IREA HAMMOND FINAL RITES ARE HELD HERE ON MONDAY, JULY 12TH

. Irea Hammond of Goldthwaite, died Sunday, July 11, 1999 at Hillview Manor Nursing Home in Goldthwaite. She was 96 years of age. She was born in Regency, Mills County Texas on April 12, 1903, the daughter of Henry and Gertrude (Singleton) Jamer. She moved with her family at age nine years to Comanche County. She married Allen Chaney in Comanche County in 1921. They had four children. The youngest died at 18 months of age. The couple divorced in 1927. She married George Hammond in 1930 and moved to Mills County and lived here most of her life. He preceded her in death in 1950 and their daughter from that ynion, Nelda Charlene Tigner passed away in 1996. Irea Hammond was an avid gardener and loved to fish. She knew the location of almost every tank in Mills County and fished most of them at one time or another. Once when she was fishing she fell and broke a hip and as luck would have it she had someone with her to get assistance. Mrs. Hammond was a housekeeper for many families in Mills County. She was also a cafe cook in Mills County and she also cooked at the Auction Barn. She was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church at Mt. Olive since 1950. She is survived by three children, Perney Chaney of Clifton, Jack (Whiz) Chaney of Mullin, and Vernell cunningham of Goldthwaite; one brother, Truman Jamer of San Angelo; two sister, Mrs. Kollie Gaddy of Odessa and Mrs. Estalleee DeWitt of Goldthwaite; nine grand children; 17 great grand children; and 13 great great grandchildren. She is also survived by four step-daughters-in-law, Mrs Inez Hammond, Mrs Merlene Hammond, Mrs Anna Beth Hammond all of Goldthwaite, and Mrs Malta Hammond of Andrews. The funeral was Monday, July 12, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at the Stacy-Wilkins Funeral Home Chapel in Goldthwaite. Terry Jackson, minister of the Goldthwaite Church of Christ, officiated at the final rites. Interment was in the Rock Springs Cemetery, Mills County Texas. Pallbearers were Richard Chaney, Curtis Evans, Gardon Chaney, Allen D. Chaney, Roland Kelly, and Allen Evans.

Annie Marie Hufstutler, 85 of Comanche Texas passed away Wednesday evening, July 7, 1999. She was born December 13, 1913 in Hico, Texas. the daughter of the late Wesley and Willie Oxley Bullard. She was married to Brady Hufstutler October 3, 1931. He preceded her in death December 28, 1985. Mrs. Hufstutler was a retired nurse aid and had been employed by Western Hills Care Center for 15 years. She was a member of the East Silde Baptist Church. She had been a resident of Comanche since 1939. She is survived by four daughters, Ella Louise Stacy and her husband, Ira C. of Fort Worth, Bobbie Nell Pierce of Hico, Catherine Ross and her husband Stanley of Odessa, Francine Partin and her husband J.C. of Priddy; one son, Roy Hufstutler and wife Ann of Comanche; four sisters, Nannie Hogan of Waco, Margaret Hogan of Fort Worth, Mildred Hunter of Hico, and Dorothy McCoy of Hico; two brothers, Presley Bullard of Benbrook and Billy Joe Bullard of Hico; eleven grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren. The funeral was Saturday July 10, 1999 at 10:00 a.a. at the Hall and Sons Funeral Home Chapel, Comanche, Texas. Rev. Don Longoria officiated at the final rites, assisted by Rev. Scott Carley and Rev. Gary Day. Interment followed in the Oakwood Cemetery Comanch, Texas.


AUBREY KEEL, 97, ASSOCIATED PRESS TELEGRAPHER; PASSES AWAY JUNE 25 IN KANSAS CITY, MO.

Aubrey E. Keel, one of three surviving Associated Press telegraphers and one of America's oldest World War II veterans, died Friday, June 25, 1999 in Kansas City, Missouri. He would have been 98 on July 3rd. Cremation is scheduled with a memorial service to follow July 11 at Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Lees Summit, a Kansas City suburb. He is survived by a daughter Mari McElyea and a grand daughter, Tara McElyea 13, of Kansas City. His wife Alcia to whom he was married 44 years died in 1994. Keel was born July 3, 1901 at Indian Gap Texas but his family soon moved to Goldthwaite. It was at Goldthwaite where at age 17, he learned telegraphy at the Santa Fe Railroad station to help relieve a World War I shortage of operators. He worked for the railroad eight years, and then was hired by the AP in 1926 to copy the news at several Texas newspapers. Greater skill as a telegrapher was required to hold down an AP job than was necessary on railroads. (This is a much shortened version of his Obit that appeared in the Goldthwaite Eagle. DAVID LAWRENCE FUNERAL HELD HERE TUES, JUNE 29

David Glenn Lawrence of Goldthwaite, Texas, died Saturday, June 26, 1999 at Medical City in Dallas Texas following complications after cancer surgery. Mr. Lawrence had been diagnosed with cancer approximately two years ago. He was 68 years of age. He was born June 8 1931 at Dawson Texas the son of William Victor and Mamie Garner Lawrence. He married Frances Cleveland on April 17, 1954 at Dawson, Texas. The couple had made their home in Goldthwaite since moving from Dallas on September 1, 1963. Mr. Lawrence served in the United States Air Force from 1950 to 1954. He served as a Driver's Licence Trooper for the Texas Department of Public Safety for 35 years from 1957 to 1992. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Goldthwaite. He was a decon there but was better known as the church greeter. He was usually found in the church foyer handing out bulletins and greeting the people as they came in to worship. Survivors include his wife, Frances Lawrence of Goldthwaite, three sons Mark Lawrence of waco, Kenneth Lawrence and his wife, Donna of Mansfield, and Brian Lawrence of Dallas; two sisters, Cherry Armentrout of Phoenix Arizona and Doris Jennings of Austin; one Brother, Jack Lawrence of Austin; one sister-in-law, Wilett Lawrence of Fort Worth; two grandchildren, Miranda and Weston Lawrence and numerous nieces, nephews and many friends. The funeral was Tuesday, June 29, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Goldthwaite with Doug Holtzclaw and Butch Foster officiating. Interment was in the Goldthwaite Memorial Cemetery, Goldthwaite Mills County Texas. Serving as pallbearers were Houston Duren, Floyd Spradley, Truett Auldridge, Cecil Egger, Charles Buck, and Les Heinze. Honorary pallbearers were Leston Berry, J.D. Harper, Arnold Roberts, Billy Hale, Felton Wilson, G.R. Mullings, Sam Padilla and Jim Oliver.


FUNERAL HELD JUNE 24 FOR RAY STARK

The funeral for Ray Stark of Grand Prairie, Texas were held Sunday June 27, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Grand Prairie. Mike Alexander officiated at the final rites. Interment was in the Restland Memorial Park, Grand Prairie, Texas. He died Thursday, June 24, 1999. He had just celebrated his 90th birthday. Ray Stark was born in Goldthwaite Texas on June 19, 1909. He was a teacher, principal and superintendent in several Texas schools. He retired from Grand Prairie I.S.D. after 44 years of service. Mr. Stark was a member of the First Methodist Church in Grand Prairie, Texas. Besides teaching, he was an avid gardener and played the violin and piano for the Grand Prairie Sunshiners Band. He had resided in Itasca, Texas the last two years where he was under the care of his grand daughter, Christi Laird. Mr Stark was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Stark. Survivors are three daughters, and sons-in-law, Ray Nell Massey of Denton, Wilma O'Rarden of Denton, and Judy Brown of Fairfax, Virginia; nine grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.


BUSTER WARREN FUNERAL CONDUCTED HERE JULY 14TH

W.W. "Buster" Warren of Goldthwaite, Texas, died Monday July 12, 1999 at his home in Goldthwaite. He was 81 years of age. Mr. Warren was born October 14, 1917 in Mills County, Texas to Harry Earl and Pearl Ann (Alexander) Warren. He married Doris Srucella Carlisle in January of 1938 at Pompey Mountain in the Duren Community of Mills County. Mr. Warren had lived in Goldthwaite since moving from Nacogdoches in 1991. He was a Baptist. His occupation was contractor/building construction. Mr. Warren served his country in the seabees during World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, and one daughter, Barbara Ann Clark. Survivors are one grandson, Troop Clark of Nacogdoches; four sisters, Edna Wasserman, Reva Keating and Ella Mae Cox, all of Goldthwaite and Erma Hiscks of Odessa; and one sister-in-law, Jewel Ratzow of Stephenville. The funeral was Wednesday, July 14, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at the Stacy-Wilkins Funeral Home Chapel in Goldthwaite. Rev Doug Holtzclaw, pastor of the First Baptist church in Goldthwaite, officiated at the final rites. Interment was in the Democrat Cemetery, Mills County, Texas. Pallbearers were Houston Duren, Tommy Head, Millard Collier, Jimmy Collier, Sonny Hicks and Bradley Hicks.


FINAL RITES HELD HERE JUNE 30 FOR MAZIE CARLISLE WILSON, 85

Mazie Carlisle Wilson of Stephenville, Texas, died Sunday June 27, 1999 at Harris Methodist Hospital in Stephenbille Texas. She was 85 years of age. She was born February 13, 1914 in Mills County Texas. She married Doyle Wilson. He preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her daughter Linda Mack, in 1993. Mazie was a member of the Baptist Church and an active member of the Business and Professional Women's Association of San Angelo, Texas. She was raised in Mills County, lived in San Angelo from 1945 until she moved to Stephenville in 1995. Mazie was retired as a buyer for Hemphill-Wells Department Store in San Angelo. She is survived by one sister, Jewel Ratzow, formerly of Brownwood, of Stephenville, Texas. Graveside services will be on Wednesday, June 30, 1999at 2:00 p.m. at the Goldthwaite Memorial Cemetery in Goldthwiate, Texas. The family requests memorial be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
