Subject: John Caldwell Souder b. Ky 1853
Date: Mon, 30 Oct 2000
From: KCBehnke@aol.com

Trying to find the parentage of John Caldwell Souders born April 25, 1853
in Cornishville, Kentucky. He married Nancy Ellen Atkinson. Nancy's family
was Morman but don't know if John was. He has a brother, William, born
1858, and married Vianer Atkinson and Abner, another brother was found living
with them on an 1880 census for Wayne County, Ky.  Tradition has it that their
father was John from Soudersburg, PA and his father was Jacob as from PA.

John and William both migrated to Missouri with the Atkinsons and Cashatt
families.  They settled in the Caldwell County area which at that time was
a Morman county. I have checked the Morman records in Missouri and can only
find the Atkinson names there.  Thanks for any help!

Subject:  Souder / Sauter family of Ohio
Date:      Thu, 19 Oct 2000
From:     MaryFernS@aol.com

I am seeking information on the family of Jacob "Frederick" Souder, who was
born in 1789 in Wurtemberg, Germany, and immigrated in 1837 through New
York, going directly to Fairfield County, Ohio.  His first wife in Germany was
Catherine Weber,  She died and he married 2nd Agatha Kirns / Kerns about
1837 in Germany, or on the ship coming over.  In about 1847, Jacob "Frederick"
and Agatha Souder moved to Seneca County, OH.  He died there in 1863.  Agatha
was born in 1797 in Wurtemburg, and died in 1862 in Seneca County, OH.

Children of Jacob "Frederick" and Catherine were:  Christian Souder who
married 1st Margaret Ann Fricker and 2nd Catherine Feigley, Gottlieb Souder,
Louisa Souder, Frederick Souder, Charles W. Souder who md. Catherine Kerns,
John Souder who md. Louisa Schlemmer, and Louis Souder who md. Christiana
E. Seigchrist.  Children of Jacob "Frederick" and Agatha were George Frederick
Souder who md. Sybilla M. Fruth and John "Adam" Souder who md. Mary Beckman.
Agatha Kirns Souder had three children by a previous marriage, but we do not
know their names.  We think she had one son and two daughters.

Would like information about any of the ancestors of the Souder / Sauter /
Sautter/ Weber, or Kirns / Kerns families of Wurtemberg, Germany, or any
Souder who resided in Ohio during the early 1800's, especially Fairfield or
Seneca Counties, (or contiguous counties) in Ohio.

Thank so much!

Mary Fern Souder

Subject:  Harrison Sowder/Perry Howard Sowder
Date:      February 13, 2000
From:    Jo Souder and Janelle Stewart Souder

We are searching for more information about our GrGrGrGrandfather, Harrison Sowder, who married Syntha Stogsdill 25 June 1835, Pulaski Co. Kentucky (with her Father: Daniel, and his Mother, by then Elizabeth Sidebottom, as witness.) He also appears in the 1840 Census of Pulaski Co. KY, with wife Syntha, and their first two children. At this point Harrison drops from sight, with Syntha and the children appearing later in Monroe Co. IN, where she married Jacob Bowman, in 1856.

Our GrGrandfather, Jefferson Souder, of Hurst TX (m. Mary Ellen East, 20 Mar 1865). He was the Son of Harrison, a Grandson of John Jefferson Sowder, of Rockcastle, KY,later of Lawrence Co. IN (as evidenced in his will (1854) where Harrison's children were named as heirs to their father's share of John Jefferson's Estate, identifying them by name, as Grandchildren. Since Harrison's name was marked through, it would seem to indicate that he was already deceased prior to probate of this document, though no other proof has thus been found.

If anyone out there has additional data concerning the above mentioned:  Harrison Sowder, (his Mother: Elizabeth), Syntha Stogsdill Sowder Bowman (her Father:  Daniel Stogsdill), or her second husband Jacob Bowman, please contact one of us. (e-mail addresses, below)

NOW, Having said all that....the reason we wonder if Harrison may have left Kentucky and moved further South, is as follows: My own Grandfather, was Perry Howard Souder, grandson of
Harrison, and Son of Jefferson Souder, of  Hurst TX , who migrated to Tarrant County TX, around 1890, from Lawrence Co. IN.  In the Summer of 1933,  P.H. drove his soft-top Pontiac, on a  trip to the "Blue-Ridge Mountains", to visit relatives. In route, he had a terrible accident,
sustaining serious head injuries. No one living, that we know of, is able to make any connection with relatives in Virginia, West Virginia, Tennessee, or So.Carolina, and our Souder Line in Tarrant County, Texas.  If anyone out there recalls reading, or having heard of such an accident, perhaps in some correspondence in your possession, please contact us. Perhaps you can help us fill in some of the missing links in our Family History.

Sincerely:

M.J. Souder, joso@wcoil.com

From: DCKinnard@aol.com

In Onstmettingen, Wuerttemberg, Germany, Conrad SAUTER (1708-1742) and Anna BOSS (b. 1712), had 3 children: Christina (21 Sep 1736); Catharina (28 Sep 1738); and Johannes (17 May 1740). After Conrad's death in 1742, Anna had another child (illegitimate): Ursula (6 May 1744). In 1746, Anna and her four children emigrated to America. Where did they settle? Did Anna remarry? What happened to Christina, Johannes (John), and Ursula? Catharina married Jacob KEINAT in Philadelphia in 1757 and died sometime after 1787, probably in Windsor Twp, York County, PA.

HELP;

Looking for Parents of Rebecca Sowder who was in the household in 1870 with Hackley Sowder and Debby. This is my great grandmother and there has been some differents about her last name I know that she went by Sowder . But some of her Grandchildern that live in Tn said that she was a Ferrell . Proof of her going by the Sowder name is on the birth certificate of two of her children. Also the census list the place of birth for her is Tn. Is this Debby child before she married Hackley are is she a neice from some of the sibling. Maybe on Hackley side of the family . A great mystery as their is no marriage record that came be found but she must have married about 1873/74 as the first child was born in 1874.   Debby is living in the home of Emanuel & Milley Sowder but Milley is deceased here in Pulaski Co Ky. Her name is listed as Deborah Terrell here.

Two sons Daniel and John moved to Texas as adults. William S. died in the Civil War. Other children of the Sowder / Gregory marriage are Briton, Cynthia and China. I have letters from William S born 3/26/1840, but none state mothers first name. Notes say that in 1835 they moved to Tazwell Tennessee, and then around 1862 moved to Somerset, Kentucky.

Subject: Souder surname in Ohio and Indiana

From: bolner <bolner@pop.iquest.net>

My maiden name is Souder. My grandfather's name was Lester Monroe Souder. He was born June 20, 1895, in Richland Township, Whitley County, Indiana. His father's name was James Monroe Souder. I have been unable to find James'parents and where he was born. Information I have been given says the Souder family moved to Whitley County, Indiana from Richland County, Ohio, and that James may have been born in Pennsylvania. Older family members have said that James' father's name was Christian and that Christian was born in Baden, Germany. I have not been able to prove any of this yet! The Souder name in Pennsylvania is thick in the early 1800's (and about as easy to trace as "Smith"!) Would love to share info on the Souder lineage.

Mary Elizabeth Sowder was my great grandmother. She married "Jake" Murray and
they lived in Roanoke. When she was pregnant with my grandfather, Jake Murray
was killed. He was a brakeman for the railroad (possibly N&W) and stepped off
his train and was killed by a passing train. She remarried Weller Baker and
then settled in Christiansburg. I believe she died in 1963 and was buried in
Roanoke. She has three children, John Cullen Murray (my grandfather) and Erma
Dears and Ruth Baker (now deceased) his half sisters.

If you have any information that ties to the information you have on the
Sowders, would you please send me a message.

Thank you,

My GGrandfather is EMANUEL SOWDER b. 5 March 1841-21 April 1914. After the Civil War, he moved from Tenn. to Texas, settled in Hill Co., then to Armstrong Co. According to the previous researchers information, EMANUEL could be the son of EMANUEL AND MILLY SOWDER. If so, then ADAM SOWDER is the GGGrandfather to me, Emanuel Ray Sowder. His birth date does reconcile with researched census in 1850 Tennessee. Nonetheless, I don't recall my grandfather, Henry, telling me anything about EMANUEL. Thanks
