and a strategically located croft (house) with
a common wall was built on the north side of the
chruch for the Horton home. It was owned by the
Hortons for the next 400 years It was known by
"le Prest Croft" This was Gobion's payment for
Hugh being bailiff for the outlying Mosley
holdings. The Inquisition of 1279 taken in
the 7th year of Edward the 1st reigh says that
Richard 111 Gobion was the Lord of the manor.
He had 33 virgates held in villeinage
by 33 villeins at Knaptoft (land owners that
paid rent to use the Lord's land) and three
virgates held in free tenure. One being
Philip de Redesdale, one being Hugh de Horton
and one being his father Henry de Horton.
(They did not pay rent but owned their
land free and clear.) 1327 Subsidy List still
shows Hugh living as a free teneent. It also
showed that he had expanded his land holding -
now owning that of his father and some land
held in common with the Redesdale family
suggesting that he had married Philips daughter
and received land as a dowry.
